Baseball Denied at Home Under the Lights in Non-Conference Game

THROGS NECK, NY – The Privateer baseball team played their first game under the new lights at Maritime College, but couldn't get the win over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson at Florham University. The Devils left with a 19-1 victory, moving their record to 10-4-1. The Privateers dropped to 2-9 on the season.

FDU opened the bottom of the first with 3 runs, but Maritime scored one of their own in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game close. Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) hit a double, followed by a single by Matthew Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack). With runners on the corners, AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) singled in the run to put the Privateers on the board. Maritime stranded the two left on base to close the inning.

The Devils opened the game up in the 4th inning, scoring 4 runs to take an 8-1 lead. The runs came on 5 hits and 2 Maritime errors. However, in the 8th inning, FDU scored 10 runs on 7 hits, including a three run homerun by James Vafiadou and a two run shot by Matt Oliveto. Despite putting the first two men on base in the bottom of the ninth, the Privateers failed to score again.

Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) was the losing pitcher for the Privateers, throwing 4 innings and iving up 10 hits, 8 runs (3 earned), 1 strikeout, and 0 walks. Cresswell came in on relief, pitching 4 innings and giving up 8 hits, 10 runs (8 earned), 2 strikeouts, and 3 walks. Kyle Rockefeller (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) threw the final inning, allowing one unearned run and striking out 2.

Maritime is scheduled to travel to Purchase College on Saturday, April 4th, for a 12:00PM conference double header.
