Box Score THROGS NECK, NY – The Privateers women's lacrosse team picked up their first victory of the 2009 season (1-3) with a 13-10 win over Lancaster Bible (1-6). The Privateers rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to lead 5-4 at the half. The Privateers never trailed in the second half.
The Chargers scored the game's first 2 goals in the opening 4 minutes, but the Privateers got on the board with 25:18 to play on Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) lone goal of the game. Lancaster was able to score twice more, bringing their lead to 4-1, their largest on the afternoon. Following that goal, the Privateers turned it up a notch and scored 4 straight to close the half, giving them a 5-4 halftime lead. Ashley Edington (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored her first goal of the season to kick things off, then Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored the next 3.
The Chargers opened the second with a goal to tie things up, but Maritime went on another run, this time 5 straight to double up Lancaster Bible 10-5. Edington scored to open it up again, then Krystyn Rutzel (Levittown, NY/Division Ave H.S.) scored two straight before Kaitlin Murray (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) and Audryanna Ward (Youngsville, N.Y./Lake Huntington) got in on the action. Murray would score once more, and Edington twice, which rounded out the Privateer scoring. Only one goal was assisted for either team, which was the Privateers' final goal from Edington, assisted by Christina George (Southold, N.Y./Southold).
Edington led Maritime with 4 goals, followed by Brady with 3 and Murray and Rutzel with 2 each. The Chargers were led by Rebekah Weidel with 4, Jenna Godwin with 3, and Kirsten Gnagy with 2. Rachel Warren scored as well for Lancaster Bible.
Julianne Cona (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) was in net all 60 minutes for Maritime, picking up her first collegiate win. She made 7 saves and picked up 5 ground balls. Kayla Maynard got the loss, stopping 8 shots for the game.
Maritime's next game will be their first road contest, traveling to Montclair State to open the Skyline Conference season. The game is scheduled for March 28th at 1:00 PM in Montclair, NJ.
