Box Score THROGS NECK, NY – The Maritime women's lacrosse team dropped to 2-0 Saturday, after the visiting Cazenovia Wildcats (2-0) picked up the 17-4 victory. The Privateers were outshot 50-12 in the game, and struggled to maintain possession of the ball, committing 36 turnovers. Kaitlin Murray (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) scored twice for the Privateers, while Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) tallied the other 2 goals.
The Privateers got on the board first after Murray scored her first goal on a free position shot. Maritime held the lead for nearly 10 minutes before the Wildcats tied the game on Courtney Caldwell's first of 4 goals on the afternoon. After taking the lead 2 minutes later, the Wildcats scored the next 6 to go up 8-1. With 1:29 to play in the half, Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) scored her first career goal on a free position shot. Cazenovia scored twice more to bring an 11-2 lead into the half.
Cazenovia scored the opening 6 goals of the half, before Maritime scored two straight. The Wildcats ended the game with a score from Nicole Kimmel, her last of five goals. Kimmel led the squad with 5 goals and 3 assists, followed by Courtney Caldwell with 4 scores and 3 assists and Christy Foster with 4 goals.
Julianne Cona (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) made 20 saves for the Privateers, 13 of which came in the opening half. Her opponent, Cari Dwinal recorded 7 saves in the game. Both teams picked up an equal number of ground balls (24), while the Privateers controlled 13 draw controls compared to Cazenovia's 10. Maritime was 12-23 on clear attempts while the Wildcats completed 14 of 17.
The Privateers will stay home for their next contest, which will be Monday evening against Westfield State. The game is slated for a 4:00PM start.
