OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2009) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference-opener, 71-68, to Old Westbury Tuesday night at the Panthers' Clark Athletic Center. With the defeat, the Privateers fall to an even 2-2 overall (0-1 Skyline), while Old Westbury improves to 2-1 (1-0 Skyline).

Maritime was led by senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), who scored a game-high 20 points after going 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line, all while bringing down six rebounds. Classmate Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds, which matched the team-high with junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High). Hurley also had 11 points, rounding out the Privateers' players in double-figures.

Old Westbury was held to just 36.4-percent from the field throughout the game compared to Maritime's 52.8-percent, but the Privateers' 53.8-percent from the free throw line could not match the Panthers' 90.5. Old Westbury was also helped out by 12 fast break points to the Maritime's zero and claimed a 17-8 advantage in second chance points.

Maritime built up its largest lead of the first half when junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) nailed a three to make the score 18-11 at 12:10, but the Panthers put together a 17-6 run to go ahead 28-24 with 3:23 left. The Privateers took the lead again after junior Trevis Craig (Queens, N.Y./Springfield) hit two jumpers and Cooper got a bucket to go up 30-28, but Old Westbury connected on two free throws and hit a late basket to take a 32-30 lead into the locker room.

The second half was closely contested and physical as the two teams combined for 18 fouls. Maritime would take the lead again after Cooper drained a shot from long distance to go up 40-38. However, Old Westbury would take the lead for good after hitting two free throws to go up 57-56 with 5:56 to play. The Privateers were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way and after each team traded late baskets, Maritime took its final timeout with 11.7 seconds left in the half down 71-68. However, the Privateers were unable convert on the ensuing possession as they turned the ball over and time ran out. Olanrewaju and Cooper combined for 27 points in the second half.

The Maritime men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday night, Dec. 3, when the squad plays host to Skyline-opponent Bard at 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Raptors fell to 0-4 on the season (0-2 Skyline) after its 77-73 loss to Sage on Tuesday.
