THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to NYU-Poly, 1-0, in a very evenly-matched game Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Skyline Conference Championships on Reinhart Field. The Fighting Blue Jays picked up the win on a penalty kick golden goal in the second overtime to advance to the semifinals against St. Joseph's-LI on Friday. With the loss, the Privateers end the season 10-7-1, while Poly improved to 10-7-1.
The game was so close-knit in the first half that shots were dead even, 8-8, and each team had their fair shares of opportunities. The Privateers took control in the second half, outshooting the Fighting Blue Jays, 8-2, but were unable to find the back of the net. NYU-Poly's Rob Petri was solid in goal, stopping all five of Maritime's shots on goal and forcing the golden-goal overtime.
The Blue Jays had the only shot of the first overtime, which was saved by junior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who finished the night with five saves.
In the second overtime, an NYU-Poly forward took a pass at the top left of the box and sped to the left around Privateer defenders. He fell down after contact with one of the defenders and a penalty kick was awarded. The Fighting Blue Jays' Joe Gabor got the call to take the shot and he was successful, beating Papson to the low left side and ending the game.
