THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2009 Skyline Conference Championships and will play host to the No. 5 seed Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
This is the third-straight year that the Privateers have qualified for the postseason conference tournament as the squad lost to Mount Saint Mary, 2-0, in the quarterfinals in 2008 and, two years ago, defeated Mount Saint Mary, 3-1, in the quarterfinals before losing to Old Westbury, 5-0, in the semis.
The Privateers enter the game with a 10-6-1 record (4-3-1 Skyline), while NYU-Poly comes in with a 9-9-1 mark (4-3-1 Skyline). The two teams played to a 0-0 draw during the regular season on Oct. 10 at Chelsea Piers, but Maritime earned the No. 4 seed over the Blue Jays despite their identical conference records due to its win over a higher ranked opponent (No. 3 Old Westbury) during the regular season.
The winner of the game on Wednesday will face No. 1 seed St. Joseph's of Long Island on Friday, Nov. 6. in Patchogue.
Maritime is led by first-year sophomore Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru) who has recorded team-highs with nine goals and 24 points and is tied for first on the squad with sophomore Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) with six assists. In net, junior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) has compiled a 9-5-1 record on the season.
