THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2009) – Junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) nearly recorded a triple-double as he led all players with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the Maritime men's basketball team's 76-34 victory over the Bears of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Tuesday night at Riesenberg Gymnasium. With the win, the Privateers improve to 2-1 overall, while St. Joe's falls to 1-4.
Williams was 6-for-12 from the field, including 1-for-2 from beyond the 3-point arc, and nailed four of his five free throws. Juniors Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) and Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) also scored in double-figures for Maritime as Lyerly had 16 and Hurley had 11. Sophomore Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) had a solid game for the Privateers, tallying eight points and seven boards. Lyerly and senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) tied for the game-high in steals with four and Olanrewaju also put up seven points and five rebounds.
Maritime held the Bears to just 23.9-percent shooting on the night, while recording a season-best 54.3-percent. The Privateers also forced 32 turnovers, the most of 2009-10 thus far.
The Maritime men's basketball team will come out of the Thanksgiving break to face Skyline-foe Old Westbury in Long Island on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Tip-off against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury is currently 1-0 on the season with an 85-78 win over York on Nov. 18.
