THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2009) – Maritime senior-captain Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) was named to the Skyline Conference men's basketball weekly honor roll for his performances in the Privateers first two games of the season, as announced by Skyline commissioner Tracy King on Monday. Maritime opened the season with a 78-56 win over City Tech on Thursday, Nov. 19, before falling to Kings Point on the road, 67-62, on Sunday.

Cooper led the Privateers with 18 points against the Yellow Jackets, while picking up a game-high five assists. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line and pulled down six rebounds in the victory. On Sunday against the Mariners, he was able to record seven points and four rebounds despite playing most of the game in foul trouble.

The Baltimore, Md., native currently ranks fifth in the conference with 2.0 assists per game, while his 13.0 points per game places him 12th in the conference. Also representing Maritime among the Skyline's best are senior Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) and juniors Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) and Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin). Josey's .571 3-point field goal percentage and his 2.0 3's per game both rank sixth, while Hurley ranks third in the Skyline with 1.5 blocks per game and fifth with 2.5 steals per game. Williams is tied for seventh in the conference 3.0 assists per game.

As a team, the Privateers rank first in the Skyline in scoring defense (61.5 points per game), scoring margin (+8.5) and 3-point field goal percentage (.438). Maritime also ranks second in the conference in keeping the opposition to just a .373 field goal percentage. The Privateers' 9.5 steals per game is fourth-best among Skyline schools, while its .483 field goal percentage ranks fifth.

The Maritime men's basketball team returns to action tomorrow night against the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. The game is a rematch of last season's 77-76 loss in Brooklyn, which the Bears won dramatically on two last second free throws. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
