Basketball Rings In 2009-10 Season With 78-56 Win Over City Tech

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2009) – The Maritime men's basketball team defeated City Tech, 78-56, Thursday night in its season-opener at Riesenberg Gymnasium. With the win, the Privateers begin the campaign 1-0, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-1.

 

Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) led four players in double-digits for the Privateers with 19 points, while dishing out a game-high five assists. Classmate Kevin Josey (Staten Island, N.Y./Monroe Webster) and junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each tallied 13 points and junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) contributed 12 points in the victory. Sophomore Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) brought down a Privateer-high seven rebounds, matching the overall game-high. Josey and Cooper each had six rebounds apiece.

 

Maritime shot 48.4-percent from the field including going 5-for-11 from three point range, while putting up a 61.1-percent clip from the free throw line. The Privateers held City Tech to just 33.3-percent shooting on the night.

 

For the Yellow Jackets, junior Gabriel Davis scored a game-high 23 points.

 

The Privateers return to the court on Sunday, when the team travels across the water to face the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Tip-off against the Mariners is scheduled for 6 p.m. at U.S.M.M.A.'s Liebertz Gym.
