THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2009) – Three goals in the first half was all that the Maritime men's soccer team would need Monday night to defeat John Jay in non-conference action. With the victory, the Privateers improve to 7-5-1 overall on the season, while the Bloodhounds fall to 2-10-2.

First-year sophomore Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru) scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute off a feed from senior David Witzke (Southold, N.Y./Southold). Alagoz sped to the right of the defender after receiving the pass and beat him. He then fired a shot through the legs of the approaching John Jay keeper from 10 yards out to give Maritime the early 1-0 lead.

The second goal came in the 22nd minute, when Witzke blasted a shot from the top of 18 yard box into the top right corner of the net. Sophomore Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) picked up an assist on that tally.

In the 30th minute, freshman Alex Reigner (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored the first goal of his career off a deep cross from Connolly to give the Privateers the 3-0 lead that they would hold on to throughout the second half for the victory.

In net, junior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) started but left due to injury in the 25h minute. Freshman Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) came in to replace Papson and kept the team's shutout intact by making three saves.

The Maritime men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the squad travels to Old Westbury to take on the Panthers in its final away conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Old Westbury's Panther Park.
