Baseball Struggles in Final Conference Double Header

THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime baseball team fell in both games of the final 2008 conference double header, to St. Joseph's 15-7 and 13-1.  The Privateers finish conference play with a 5-11 overall record.

Down 1-0 after the top half of the second inning, the Privateers rallied with two outs in the bottom half to score 4 runs and take a 4-1 lead that they held until the 4th inning.  With the bases loaded and two out, Matt Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack) hit a base clearing double, driving home 3 of his 4 RBI for the game. He homered for the third straight game in the 7th inning, finishing the game 3-5 and scoring once. 

The Privateers couldn't get the bat going in the second game, recording only two hits.  The first hit was a homerun by Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, NY/St. Francis Prep), his first of the season.  Cresswell singled in the bottom of the seventh, for Maritime's second hit of the game.

James Hoffman (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (East Islip, NY/East Islip) was on the mound in the first game, going 6 innings and striking out 2.  He allowed 8 runs on 9 hits.  Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) was on the mound in the second game, going 4 innings and giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and striking out 3.

Maritime will end the regular season tomorrow when they host St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) for a 10:00AM double header.
