THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime baseball team capped off the afternoon with a victory over Old Westbury in the second game of the doubleheader.  The Privateers won 5-4 in the bottom of the 8th inning, when senior Matt Thomas (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.  Maritime lost the first game 13-0 moving their record to 5-14 (5-7) on the season.

Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th, the Privateers rallied for 3 runs to tie the game.  The inning began when AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) doubled with 1 out and the Privateers drew two consecutive walks to load the bases.  With the bases full, Kevin Mooney (East Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg) (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg) hit a single to drive in the first run.  Brenton Yockel (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) followed with a single of his own to cut the lead to 4-3.  Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, NY/St. Francis Prep) followed those singles another, driving in the tying run.

The Privateers held Old Westbury scoreless in their half of the final inning in regulation, but couldn't get their bats going in the bottom of the 7th.  After the Privateers held the Panthers back once more in the 8th, Maritime got their chance to win the game and took advantage of it.

Mooney led off the inning with a single.  Yockel took Mooney's place after the Panthers failed to turn a double play.  A poor throw by the catcher in an attempt to catch Yockel stealing second allowed Yockel to advance to third base with only 1 out in the inning.  Montanes struck out swinging, and with the winning run 90 feet away and two outs, the Panthers intentionally walked Matt Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack) in hopes of getting Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) (Throggs Neck, NY/Fordham Prep) to end the inning.  Old Westbury walked him on four straight pitches to load the bases for Thomas.  With the count 2-1, Thomas couldn't get out of the way of a wild fastball, and it hit him in the back, forcing the winning run home in the bottom of the 8th.

Cresswell got the win for the Privateers, pitching all 8 innings.  He gave up 6 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 3 for the game.  The Privateers did not commit and error the entire game, for the first time all season.

Maritime will be back on the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to King's Point for a single game.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00PM.
