THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime baseball team won the first game of the conference double header against Polytechnic 14-6, for their first victory of the season.  They dropped the second game 6-0 to move to 1-7 on the season.

The Privateers scored at least one run in all but 2 innings in the first game, including a six run third inning to break the game open and take a 9-4 lead.  Six Privateers had a multi-hit game, with Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Brenton Yockel (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) each having three hits and 3 RBI apiece.  Yockel connected for a triple in the sixth inning, driving home two runs.  Matthew Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack) also had a strong game, going 2-5 with 2RBI and a double.  Jacob Nessel (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton) (Montauk, NY/East Hampton) finished with 2RBI on 2-4 hitting including a triple.

On the mound, James Hoffman (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (East Islip, NY/East Islip) got the win, pitching 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and striking out 9.  Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, NY/Holy Trinity) came in on relief, pitching 2 innings, and giving up 1 run on 4 hits.  Chris Watson (Bayville, NY/Locust Valley) recorded the save, with one strikeout and no hits in the final inning.

For the visitors, Devin Kittle went 4-5 with 3RBI in the first game.  Teammate Vincent Leone was 4-4 with a run scored.

In the second game, Polytechnic pitcher Frank Spada pitched a 2 hitter and struck out 6 in a complete game performance.  The only two hits allowed was a double to Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Lourdes) and a single to Cresswell.  Offensively, Spada got the most help from Mike Ritzzo who had a base clearing double with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson) pitched the complete game for the Privateers, striking out 7.  He gave up 10 hits and walked one.

The Privateers will be on the road tomorrow against Mount Saint Mary's in Newburgh, NY.  The double header is scheduled to begin at noon.
