Old Westbury, NY – Junior left-hander James Hoffman (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (East Islip, NY/East Islip) had one of his best games as a Privateer, pitching a no-hitter through eight innings and finished with just three hits and two earned runs against him as Maritime College defeated the Merchant Marine Academy 3-2 in the first game of a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Baseball Complex in Old Westbury, NY.

In the second game, sophomore first baseman Matthew Cresswell (Commack, NY/Commack)'s (Commack, NY/Commack) hit 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI's completing the sweep of the Mariners, 8-4. Today's victories marked the first wins over Merchant Marine since back on April 20, 2004.

Cresswell helped get things going in the bottom of the first in game one, getting on base via a double and scoring a batter later giving Maritime the early 1-0 lead. Maritime then scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 3-0 lead. Hoffman's no-hitter was broken in the top of the ninth, when the Mariners began a rally attempt, but he was able to hold them to two runs to record the first victory in his three-year collegiate career. Senior Jim Backus (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) allowed no earned runs and struck out seven batters in defeat.
