Friday Recap
KINGS POINT, NY – For the first time since 2016, the Maritime College men's swimming & diving team has a Skyline Conference champion.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) became the Privateers' first conference champion in 10 years with his win in the 100 yard breaststroke on Saturday at the U.S Merchant Marine Academy's Sue Petersen Lubow Pool, then added another Skyline title in the 200 yard breaststroke. Behind his two victories, Maritime finished second in the team standings. The Privateer women, meanwhile, placed fifth as a team.
In the 100 breaststroke, Hayes posted a time of 57.94 seconds. He picked up his second gold medal of the meet in the 200 breaststroke, winning by nearly three seconds with a 2:08.58 clocking. Hayes also placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (53.43) on Saturday. He was named All-Skyline in three individual events (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 50 freestyle), as well as four relays (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 medley, 400 medley).
His two Skyline titles are Maritime's first on the men's side since the Privateers won four events in 2016.
Jessica Magee was the women's 1-meter diving champion last year. In addition, Hayes became the first Maritime swimmer of either gender with multiple individual Skyline Championships in the same year since Collin McNamara swept the 50 and 100 freestyles in 2015.
Joining Hayes on the second-place 400 medley relay were
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY),
Alex Osypenko (Oyster Bay, NY) and
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY). The quartet's time was 3:51.55. That same foursome, swimming in the order Hayes-Saharov-Klimek-Osypenko, wrapped up the meet by taking second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:26.49).
Klimek also placed sixth in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:25.21) and took seventh in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.10). Osypenko, meanwhile, notched eighth-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (57.84) and 200 yard butterfly (2:21.24), as well as a seventh-place showing in the 100 yard freestyle (51.12). After placing fourth on the 3-meter board,
Johnny Walz (Staten Island, NY) added another fourth-place result in the 1-meter diving competition (279.05).
As a team, the Privateers collected 296 points to rank second overall behind Merchant Marine. The women's squad tallied 127 points, which was good for fifth place in the team standings. Merchant Marine also won the women's team title.
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY) was the top individual performer for the Maritime women. She was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.13) and seventh in the 200 breaststroke (3:03.99).
Emily Bryant (Hilliard, OH) grabbed ninth place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 3:06.70. Elefante and Bryant closed the meet by joining with
Kristen Carroll (New York, NY) and
Rebecca Kmiotek (Lindenhurst, NY) to place fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:36.85).
