KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams began action at the Skyline Conference Championships on Friday. The competition, which was rescheduled from Saturday-Sunday due to the impending winter weather, was held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
Six events for each gender were held on the opening day of the meet.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) had the top individual showing for the men's squad. He took second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.02 seconds.
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) was seventh in the 500 yard freestyle (5:27.25), while
Alex Osypenko (Oyster Bay, NY) finished sixth in the 200 yard individual medley (2:12.24).
Johnny Walz (Staten Island, NY) added 11 points to the team score with a fourth-place showing on the 3-meter diving board (291.80).
In addition, the Privateers placed second in both relays that were contested on Friday. The quartet of
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY), Hayes, Klimek and Osypenko posted a time of 1:32.04 in the 200 yard freestyle relay. In the 200 yard medley relay, meanwhile,
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY), Hayes, Osypenko and Klimek finished in 1:43.84.
Maritime's men were sitting in second place overall with 101 points on the first day of competition. The Privateer women tallied 47 points, which put them in fifth place after Day 1.
Emily Bryant (Hilliard, OH) notched the best individual result for the women's team. She grabbed ninth place in the 200 individual medley with a 3:07.33 clocking. Bryant also anchored Maritime to fifth place in the 200 freestyle relay, where she was joined by
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY),
Kristen Carroll (New York, NY) and
Rebecca Kmiotek (Lindenhurst, NY) to post a time of 1:58.91. That quartet (swimming in the order Kmiotek-Elefante-Carroll-Bryant) later took fourth in the 200 medley relay (2:22.67). Individually, Carroll finished 12
th in the 50 freestyle (27.79).
There will be two swimming sessions on Saturday, with the first getting underway at 10:30 a.m. After the diving competition at 1 p.m., the meet concludes with the final six swimming events, starting at 4:30 p.m.
