Friday Recap
PISCATAWAY, NJ – At last year's Metropolitan Championships,
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) won the 200 yard breaststroke to become the Maritime College swimming & diving program's first-ever Metropolitan champion. This year, he earned his second career Metropolitan title—this time in the 100 yard breaststroke. His winning time of 56.96 seconds broke his own school record in the event at Rutgers University's Werblin Recreation Center on Saturday.
Hayes was the top qualifier after the morning preliminaries, when he just missed the previous record with a 57.95-second clocking. He was also the No. 3 qualifier in the 100 yard butterfly, swimming a school record 52.90 seconds in the preliminaries. Hayes lowered that mark to 52.17 seconds in the final, which was good for the silver medal.
Two other Privateers made the "A" final in their event, as well.
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) continued his strong meet with a sixth-place showing in the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.81). In the women's 100 breaststroke, meanwhile,
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY) finished fifth overall with a time of 1:14.00.
In addition, two Maritime men were credited with ninth place after touching first in the "B" final—
Parker Endress (Hamburg, NY) in the 400 yard individual medley (4:52.75) and
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY) in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.06). Pineda also swam the leadoff leg on the 200 yard medley relay team that placed fifth in 1:47.27. Hayes, Klimek and
Alex Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) were the other members of the 200 medley relay.
After the second day of competition, the Privateers are fifth in the men's team standings with 409 points. The meet concludes on Sunday with the remaining eight events, including the men's 200 breaststroke, where Hayes will look to defend his gold medal. Preliminaries get underway at 10 a.m., with the finals session set for 5:30 p.m.
