PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams began competition at the Metropolitan Championships from Rutgers University's Werblin Recreation Center on Friday. With
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) leading the way, the Privateer men were sitting in fourth place as a team with 183 points thru five events.
Klimek just missed qualifying for the "A" final in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing ninth in the preliminaries. He then won the "B" final in a time of 5:14.46 to place ninth overall. Klimek also led off Maritime's 200 yard freestyle relay squad that took fourth in 1:34.77. He was joined on the relay by
Liam McManus (Islip, NY),
Alex Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) and
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY). The quartet of Hayes, Anastasiades, Klimek and
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY), meanwhile, captured fifth place in the 400 yard medley relay (4:00.35).
Parker Endress (Hamburg, NY) was 10
th overall in the 200 yard individual medley, posting a time of 2:18.91. In the 50 yard freestyle, Pineda contested the "B" final and ended up 14
th overall after touching the wall in 24.47 seconds. McManus took first place in the "C" final (24.81), giving him 17
th place overall.
Maritime also had two competitors in the women's 50 freestyle. After finishing 0.01 seconds shy of qualifying for the "A" final during the morning session,
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY) swam the "B" final in 27.30 seconds to place 10
th overall.
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY) notched a time of 28.10 seconds to take first in the "C" final and 17
th overall. The duo accounted for 26 points in the team standings.
Saturday's events get underway at 10:45 a.m., with the finals session set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
