THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team was well-represented on the 2023 All-Skyline Conference squad, which was announced on Tuesday.  Defensive Player of the Year Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) was one of five Privateers named First Team All-Skyline, and Maritime also placed four players on the All-Skyline Second Team.  Head Coach Justin Manjares, meanwhile, was named Skyline Coach of the Year for the third time.

Weigand, who joined the team this season as a graduate transfer, played lockdown defense on the opponent's top attacker in every game.  He picked up 105 ground balls and ranked fifth in the league with 5.53 ground balls per game.  Weigand also caused 28 turnovers to go along with three goals and two assists.  He was named Skyline Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season.

Joining Weigand on the All-Skyline First Team were attackers Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) and Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY), defender Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) and long-stick midfielder Matthew Guercio (Smithtown, NY).  Reilly became just the third player in program history to score 50 goals in a season, finishing with 52.  Tomich, meanwhile, had a program-record 42 assists and led the conference with 86 points.  Hendry led the league with 37 caused turnovers, an average of nearly two per game, and Guercio contributed on both ends of the field.  He recorded 47 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.

Maritime's four Second Team All-Skyline selections were faceoff specialist Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY), attacker Charles Longo (Bellport, NY), goalkeeper Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) and short-stick defensive midfielder Christian Vera (Baldwin, NY).  Bruno won 57.5 percent of his faceoffs and collected 90 ground balls.  Longo, who set a single-game program record with 12 points against Manhattanville on April 8, finished third on the team in scoring (27 goals, 46 points).  McGrady tallied 13 wins while holding opponents to 9.71 goals per game.  Vera, meanwhile, was a key member of the Privateers' man-down unit.  He picked up 27 ground balls and added seven caused turnovers.

Manjares, who was previously selected as the Skyline Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021, led Maritime to its fourth straight Skyline Championship Game.  The Privateers finished the regular season unbeaten in conference play for the fourth consecutive time and put together a program-record 12-game winning streak from March 15-May 2.  That string included Maritime's first-ever victory over a nationally-ranked team, a 10-7 triumph over No. 20 Coast Guard on March 15.

This is the third career All-Skyline nod for Hendry, a Second Team honoree in both 2021 and 2022.  Guercio was also named Second Team All-Skyline last season.  The other seven Privateers were recognized by the conference for the first time.
