Box Score THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's lacrosse team traveled to Union College on Saturday afternoon to take on SUNY Cortland in the Red Dragons season opener. Unfortunately, the Privateers couldn't improve to 3-0 on the season as Cortland came away with a 15-6 victory.
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) tied up the game at 1-1 with 7:58 left in the first quarter off a pass from
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), but Maritime couldn't keep the game within one score as the Red Dragons pulled ahead to a 4-1 lead as the quarter came to a close.
Second quarter goals from Leake and
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) kept the Maritime offense moving, but ultimately they headed to the locker rooms facing a 9-3 deficit at halftime.
Cortland held onto their lead throughout the second half and ended up opening their season with a win against the Privateers. Leake tacked on his third goal of the game in the second half, while
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) chipped in a goal and Keegan tallied two more assists and a goal.
"Cortland is a very good team and gave us a tough test this early in the season," said head coach
Justin Manjares. "We know we can play better than we did and we're going to learn from this loss and come back stronger in the next game."
The Privateers will travel to SUNY Oneonta next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start.
