Men's Lacrosse Clinches Top Seed with 13-10 Senior Night Win over Farmingdale St.

The Maritime College men's lacrosse team made history on senior night against Farmingdale St. as they clinched the top seed for the Skyline Conference playoffs for the first time in program history with a 13-10 win. With the victory, Maritime improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in Skyline play. The Privateers honored their six honors, Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), Rob Antonio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Matt Kirby (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), and Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber), prior to the start of the contest.

Despite a 13-day break since their last contest, Maritime got off to a hot start as Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) found Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) just 40 seconds into play to take the first lead of the game. After the Rams and Privateers traded goals to a 2-2 tie, Maritime took advantage at the end of the first quarter and took control of the game. Petty, Ziemski and Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) all found the back of the net in the final five minutes of the first quarter to make it a 5-2 advantage heading into the second period.

After a slow start to the second quarter, Brett Boisits (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) broke the scoreless drought with a goal with 9:17 remaining until halftime. As the heavy rain started to pour down, Connell and Leake added two more goals for the Privateers to make it a 8-4 lead heading into halftime.

As the rain continued to pour down in the second half, the Rams made a big push for a comeback. Farmingdale St. scored four unanswered goals when lightning struck nearby and the game had to head into a 45-minute delay. Coming out of the weather delay, Maritime stepped up defensively and shut down any hopes of a comeback. In the final 22 minutes of play, Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and the Privateers defense only allowed two more goals to get in. Offensively, Trodden added two more goals to help seal the game and Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) found Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) to mark his 29th assist of the season, a new single-season program record.

Maritime's offense saw a diverse effort as eight different players found the back of the net, with Leake leading the charge behind three goals and two assists. Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY) went 16-25 in faceoffs, while Weigold tallied 10 saves in the win.

"Obviously it's great to clinch the top seed, but our main goal of the season is to win the conference championship," said head coach Justin Manjares. "There's still a lot of work left to do and we're excited to go out and compete on our home turf in the playoffs."

The Privateers finish out the regular season at Mount Saint Mary on Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. The first round of the playoffs will be Wednesday, May 1.
