Just two days after becoming the first team in program history to clinch the top seed in the Skyline Conference playoffs, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team capped off their historic regular season by defeating Mount Saint Mary 17-6 to finish 6-0 in conference play. In addition to finishing the season undefeated, sophomore attacker
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) recorded his 100th career goal.
The Privateers got off to a shaky start in the opening period, but they were able to regain control after scoring the final three goals in the last five minutes.
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Colin Flannery, and
Garrett Vincent (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Community) finished out the first quarter by all recording unassisted goals. Maritime kept the momentum going into the second period as
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and DeMeo tallied the first two goals to increase the lead to 7-3. After the Knights closed the gap to 7-5, Trodden and Flannery put away two goals before halftime to bring the lead back up to four.
The second half continued the offensive dominance for the Privateers as
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) opened up the scoring with back-to-back goals. The Knights tacked on one more goal to make it a 12-6 advantage, but Maritime buckled down after that and scored the final five goals of the game.
DeMeo finished off the action by scoring his 100th career goal, and 62nd of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The Sayville, NY native entered the week leading the country in goals per game at 4.54.
Leake led the offense with a seven-point performance on five goals and two assists. DeMeo tallied five points with two goals and three assists.
Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY) put together another solid performance at faceoff's, by winning 17 out of 26 opportunities.
The Privateers will take on St. Joseph's Long Island on Wednesday, May 1st on Reinhart Field. Stay tuned for an update on Monday, April 29 regarding a start time for the playoff game.
