Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) broke his own program record for goals in a season on Tuesday night in a 15-7 Skyline Conference win for the Maritime College men's lacrosse team over Purchase College. The sophomore netted his 39th goal of the season five minutes into the second quarter to break the record he set his freshmen year.
The Privateers wasted no time getting on the board as
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) found
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) less than three minutes into the game to take a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Panthers answered back with a fast break unassisted goal to tie the game up. Maritime was determined to take control of the game though as they scored the final three goals of the period off the sticks of DeMeo,
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), and Colin Flannery.
Purchase continued to fight to stay in the game and struck first in the second frame with another unassisted goal, but the Privateers were quick to answer once again and ensure they had a comfortable lead going into halftime.
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) scored the first of five consecutive goals for Maritime and then found DeMeo in front of the net on the ensuing possession, where the sophomore easily scored his 39th goal of the season. DeMeo wasn't done yet and scored another goal just over a minute later.
Garrett Vincent (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Community) and Keegan rounded out the first half scoring off assists from
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Leake.
The second half saw a quick attempt at a comeback from Purchase as Dylan Gethicker scored twice within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Privateers quickly put any hopes of coming back away as DeMeo and Leake combined for three uanswered goals in the next four minutes of play. Ziemski closed the game out with his fifth goal of the season to make it a 15-5 lead with seven minutes remaining.
DeMeo led the scoring effort for Maritime with five goals, while Leake also tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Connell chipped in four assists and Keegan finished with three goals and one assist.
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) earned the win with 10 saves in net.
