Box Score BOX SCORE - The Maritime College men's lacrosse team got off to a hot start on the road at Montclair State as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Red Hawks were able to bounce back and pull out the 15-12 win.
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) got the scoring started for the Privateers with an unassisted goal four minutes into the game, and on the ensuing face-off, Maritime quickly scooped up the ball and found
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) for their second goal in just 15 seconds. After Montclair State answered with a goal of their own, the Privateers went on to score three more times before the end of the first period. In a man-up situation, Colin Flannery found
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) to make it a 3-1 advantage. Less than two minutes later, it was Flannery with a great pass again, this time to DeMeo who pushed the lead to 4-1.
Leading 4-1 and still in the first quarter, the Privateers made one final push to extend their lead as
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) found the back of the net with just two seconds remaining to give Maritime the momentum and a 5-1 lead going into the second quarter. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks were able to respond before halftime and hold the Privateers scoreless to take a 6-5 lead going into the locker room.
Maritime was able to start out strong after halftime and tie the game at seven after another goal from Leake, but once again Montclair State came back stronger and picked up three consecutive goals for a 10-7 advantage. The Privateers made a final push in the closing minutes of the game with back-to-back goals from DeMeo and Trodden, but they weren't able to close the gap and fell 15-12.
DeMeo and Trodden led the Privateers goal scorers with three goals each, while Leake and Flannery added a team-high four points each.
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) tallied 11 saves in the loss.
Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 with Skyline Conference action against Purchase College on Reinhart Field at 7 p.m.
