The Maritime College men's Lacrosse team took to the field on Wednesday night as they visited the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors. The Privateers came out on top as they bested the Warriors by a score of 14-6. With the win, the Maritime improves to 6-2 on the season.
The Privateers wasted very little time to get their offense started, as Leake connected on a pass from
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) in just the 47
th second of the match. Following the early Petty-to-Leake connection, the Privateers would go on to score five more times in the first quarter to take the 6-1 advantage heading into the second frame. In the second quarter of action, the Privateers added to their lead by posting four goals to head into the half with a 10-4 lead.
In the final 30 minutes of the match, Maritime would hold steady to their lead with a combined solid effort on both the offensive and defensive ends. As the final horn sounded, the Privateers left Eastern Connecticut with a 14-6 win.
On offense, Maritime was led by the sophomore duo of
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side). In the game, DeMeo totaled five goals, while Leake added four of his own. The Privateers also received offensive contributions from
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), who had two goals. Three other Privateers scored in the game, including
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford),
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who all added one goal apiece.
In the matchup, the Privateers totaled 12 assists as a team, which matches their single-game season best that the Privateers achieved in their 17-11 victory over Hampton. The trio of Connell, DeMeo and Ziemski all added two assists apiece commanded the Privateers offensive distribution.
In goal,
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) totaled nine saves and only allowed five goals. With the win, Weigold improves to 4-2 on the 2019 season.
Maritime team returns to action this weekend as they visit the Montclair State Red Hawks at 3:00 P.M on Saturday. After their matchup with the Red Hawks, the Privateers return to Reinhart Field on Tuesday April 2, as they play their first of six conference games on the season, and host Purchase.
