Men's Lacrosse Bounces Back with 16-13 Win over Manhattanville

After losing their four-game win streak on Wednesday night to the United States Coast Guard Academy, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team bounced back with a 16-13 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The Privateers offense saw nine different players find the back of the net as they improved to 5-2 on the season.

Maritime got off to a slow start as the Valiants scored two quick goals within the first two minutes of the game to take control early. As the defense settled into the game, Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) jump-started the Privateers offense with a goal off an assist from Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North). Mike Gomes (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) then followed it up with an unassisted goal and DeMeo struck for the second time in the quarter to make it three consecutive goals. Colin Flannery capped off the first quarter comeback with 39 seconds remaining to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) kept the offensive momentum going for the Privateers in the second quarter as scored an unassisted goal to make it a 5-3 advantage. Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) then made an incredible fast-break goal on the following possession. Maritime kept the pressure on and found their top goal-scorer in DeMeo once again as they took their biggest lead of the half at 8-4 with just over five minutes remaining. The Valiants were able to cut the lead before halftime, but Garrett Vincent (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Community) scored his first goal of the season with 1:10 on the clock to give the Privateers the momentum and a 9-6 lead heading into the locker room.

Manhattanville was able to make it a two-goal game with seven minutes left in the third quarter, but a trio of goals from DeMeo, Connell and Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) gave Maritime control of the non-conference matchup with a 14-9 advantage. Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) netted his second goal of the game before the end of the third quarter to hold the lead at 15-10 going into the final period.

Despite the offensive firepower all game long, both defenses buckled down in the final quarter and the Privateers were able to hang on and win the game 16-13. Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) got the start and the win in goal after only allowing six, first half goals. Senior Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) finished out the second half and tallied seven saves to help Maritime seal the victory.

Offensively, DeMeo led Maritime with five goals and two assists. Connell, Trodden, and Flannery all added two goals and one assist, while Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), Gomes, Leake, Petty, and Vincent rounded out the goal scorers with one each.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Eastern Connecticut at 7 p.m. Check out highlights from the win and an interview with head coach Justin Manjares, Kevin Buser (/), and Colin Flannery below.
