Men's Lacrosse Winning Streak Comes to an End with 14-9 Loss to Coast Guard

The Maritime College men's lacrosse team had its four-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday night as they fell on the road to the United States Coast Guard Academy 14-9.

The Bears got off to a quick start as they scored two goals in the first minutes of the game, however, the Privateers responded strongly with Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) netting back-to-back goals to even up the game with nine minutes left in the first quarter. Unfortunately, Coast Guard was able to strike twice more before the end of the first quarter, including a goal with one second on the clock to make it a 4-2 advantage.

The strong offense from the Bears continued to pressure Maritime and they were able to take a commanding 7-2 lead with 13 minutes left in the second quarter. The Privateers were able to slow the pace of the game down for the remainder of the first half and chipped away at the lead to make it a four goal lead heading into the locker room.

DeMeo led the Privateers to a strong third quarter with three goals of his own to help cut the lead once again and make it an 11-8 game heading into the fourth quarter. Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also picked up an unassisted goal in the quarter.

Maritime was unable to keep up the high-paced offense for the fourth quarter and couldn't come out with the comeback victory. The loss dropped the Privateers to 4-2 overall on the season.

DeMeo posted a team-high five goals in the loss, while Connell, Leake, Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), and Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) also chipped in goals. Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) saw time in goal for Maritime, and the duo came out of the game with seven and six saves, respectively.

The Privateers return to action this Saturday at 4 p.m. as they will host Manhattanville College.
