THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College swimming teams opened up their 2019-20 Skyline Conference campaign with a pair of wins against Purchase College. The men's team picked up a 120-90 victory, while the women earned a 90-70 win.
Maeve Lavery (Bronx, NY/St. Ferry),
Emma Haedrich (West Islip, NY/West Islip/),
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), and
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent) got the days started on the women's side with a time of 2:17.19 in 200-yard medley relay. Lavery then picked up another first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard freestyle,
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams),
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent), and
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) finished first, second, and third respectively.
Brow and Haedrich kept the strong performance going with the top-two finishes in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 27.78 and 31.89, respectively. Mesones then picked her first top-finish of the day as she won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:27.84. Brow tallied her third win of the day as she placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.29, while
Bridget Stack (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) ended in second place at 1:15.82. The women's team capped off the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the team
Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), Stack, Champlin, and Thompson.
On the men's side, the team of
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park),
Matt Sesack (Sayville, NY/Sayville),
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township), and Edwin Moriarty opened up the conference meet with a time of 1:49.64 in the 200-yard medley relay as they placed first. Dan Walsh,
John McCafferty (Staten Island, NY/Saint Peters), and
Derrick Kennedy (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) then swept the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 11:48.41, 11:59.33, and 15:03.7. Moriarty then added another first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by
Brian Reilly (Sayville, NY/Sayville) and
Thomas Wakley (Milton, NY/Marlboro).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Thomas Murray placed first at 23.98, and he was followed by
Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Troy with times of 24.23, and 24.41.
Malachi Melli (Bridgewater, NJ/Somerset County VoTech) then continued the impressive day for the Privateers with a 1:00.86 time in the 100-yard butterfly and a first-place finish.
Zybo Marchetti (Key Largo, FL/Coral Shores) picked up another first-place for the Privateers with a time of 1:02.76 in the 100-yard backstroke. The team of
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township), Moriarty, Troy and Walsh then concluded the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.43.
Maritime will get back in action on Thursday when they travel to Western Connecticut State at 6 p.m.
