Privateers Come Up Short Against Old Westbury

The Maritime College basketball team traveled to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference matchup in which the Privateers came up short to the Panthers by a final score of 71-62.

The Privateers were led in scoring by Junior Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who added 19 points along with five three-point field goals. McGovern, the Privateers leading scorer on the season, caps off a solid scoring week in which he had 22 points against St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Tuesday and 25 points in a Maritime victory over Merchant Marine on Thursday. The Privateers had three other players who scored in the double-digit point range with Brennan Whelen who added 14, Alec Downes (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) who scored 12 points and Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) who added 10 points off of the bench. Along with his scoring total, the sophomore Whelen made his presence known throughout the court as he added nine assists and six rebounds.

Coming off of a Thursday victory over Merchant Marine, the Privateers came soaring out of the gates to take a 31-30 lead heading into the half-time break. The Privateers concluded the first half with the advantage over Old Westbury in field goals made, three-point percentage and rebounds.

In the second half, the Privateers had no answers for the Panthers offense as they would leave Old Westbury with a 71-62 defeat.  Despite coming up short, the Privateers were able to secure the advantage in the rebound battle by a margin of 47-43.  Leading the way for Maritime was Ronan Doherty (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate) who totaled nine rebounds. Next for the Privateers was Walker, who added eight and Whelen, who added six.

The Privateers return to action this Tuesday as they host St. Joseph's (LI) in Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
