Football Successful in Opener

Box Score CASTINE, Maine - The Maritime Privateers came out of the gate right where they left off a season ago. By a score of 36-8, the Privateers secure their first victory of the season. In the defeat of Maine Maritime, Coach Vincent DiGaetano recorded his first win as head coach of the Privateers.The Privateers were led by a group of familiar faces on both ends of the ball.

The Privateers first score of the game came from a 28 yard field goal by senior Ian Ziemski (Bel Air,Md/ C. Milton Wright).The game momentum started to shift towards the Privateers with 3:09 left in the first quarter as junior Robert Wheeler (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner) forced a fumble which gave the Privateers offense a chance to score in the Maine red zone. The Privateers capitalized on this opportunity by way of an eight yard touchdown run by senior Thomas Wright ( Wantagh, N.Y. / Massapequa) to give Maritime their first touchdown of the young 2018 season and a 10-0 lead. The Privateers scored 21 consecutive points before Maine's lone points in the 4th quarter.

The Privateers were led by a number of dynamic offensive performances. Wright threw two touchdowns for 264 yards and 70% completion. In the huddle with Wright were the owner of some outstanding performances. The senior wide receiver duo Brandonn Drumgole (Mt. Sinai, N.Y. / Mt. Sinai) and  Christian Castle (Felton, Pa. / Red Lion) both had 80 plus receiving yards on the afternoon. Along with his nine yard touchdown catch, Drumgole averaged 11.1 yards per catch. Castle's 80 yards came on ten catches with an average of eight yards per catch. Senior Curtis Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Boys and Girls) also caught a 12 yard touchdown pass which came in the 4th quarter. On the ground, The Privateers totaled 180 rushing yards. Leading the charge was junior Kahlil Lewin (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Erasmus Hall) who amassed over 100 total yards of offense in his Maritime debut. Along with his 78 rushing yards, Lewin also caught for 32 yards, including a key 2nd and 21 catch for 20 yards that was instrumental in Maritime securing a touchdown later in the possession. Along with Lewin; junior William Patsakos (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner), Wright and freshman Nicholas Morman ( Covington, La. / Notrhlake Christian) all ran for 20 plus yards. Patakos was stellar in the red zone for the Privateers as he had two rushing TDs. The Privateers front line led by seniors Dean Lynch (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / Oceanside) and Nicholas Acevedo (Woodside, N.Y. / Holy Cross) were the catalyst to the 400 plus yards of offense. The O-line slowed down the Mariners defense all game by only allowing three sacks for a total of three yards. Due to the stellar performance, the Mariners defense registered zero turnovers.

The offensive success was matched by a solid performance defensively. Led by three takeaways, the Privateers defense recorded two interceptions by Wheeler and junior Deion Johnson (Bronx, N.Y. / DeWitt Clinton).The Privateers experienced core of junior Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y. / Sayville) senior Payton Campbell (Rockaway, N.J. / Morris Knolls), senior Jack Johnson (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) and senior Steven Fehr (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) all had stellar performances. Bailey registered a game-best 11 total tackles along with 1 sack. Campbell also got through the Mariners offense with two sacks along with his 8 tackles. Senior Jack Johnson (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) also recorded a sack to go along with his three tackles. Fehr also added a sack. The cast of senior Matthew Mavrovich (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East), junior Justin Snuffer (Maple Shade, N.J. / Maple Shade) and senior John O'Connor (Johns Creek, Ga. / Mount Pisgah) also made their presence known on defense with 7,5 and 4 tackles respectively.

The Privateers will next hit the field on September 7th against Mass. Maritime on Reinhart Field.
