THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse played its final non-conference home game on Saturday afternoon and picked up the victory over the Delhi Broncos by the margin of 16-8 on Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by senior
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), who had seven points on the game including the 100th of his career. Danahy had three goals to go along with a team-high four assists as he also scooped up three ground balls in the win.
Freshmen
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and
Collin Flannery (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had four-point games as Flannery had four goals, while Leake notched two goals and two assists. Freshman
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) had three first-half goals, while senior
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), along with juniors
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) all had two-point games with one goal and one assist apiece.
Sophomore
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) added one goal, while juniors
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) tallied assists. Sophomore
Shawn Callahan (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and freshman
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) also had helpers on the afternoon.
Senior
Anthony Gervasio (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was 20-for-27 as he took all but one faceoff on the afternoon, while leading the team with 11 ground balls on the afternoon. Sophomore
Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) notched one faceoff win in his one attempt on the game. In addition to Gervasio's 11 ground balls, Petty notched eight while both Leake and Connell had five ground balls each on the game.
Defensively senior
John Piscitello Jr. (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) and Ziemski led the way with two forced turnovers on the afternoon. Eight other Privateers had one caused turnover apiece on the game.
All four goalkeepers played for the Privateers as senior
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) got the start and the victory as he made five saves on the game through the first 36:49. Senior
Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) came on and played 12:13, while freshmen
Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and
Nick Pasco (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) split the remaining 11 minutes as Bockelman made two stops on the afternoon.
Maritime jumped out to the early 1-0 lead as DeMeo took a long lead pass from Weigold to open the scoring just three minutes in. DeMeo scored his second of the game off a feed from Ragusa as Maritime held the 2-0 lead into the second quarter.
Connell got on the board to open the second quarter off a pass from Danahy, followed by Ragusa's goal coming from Trodden. Ziemski, DeMeo, and Flannery all scored to give Maritime a 7-0 lead with just under five minutes to go in the half. Delhi tallied a goal with 93 seconds left in the period to send the teams into halftime with Maritime leading by six.
Trodden got the goal to open up scoring in the second half off of a feed from Danahy. After a Delhi goal, Flannery notched his 10th goal of the season before Delhi answered again to trim the Privateer lead to 9-3.
Maritime closed out the quarter on a 3-1 lead as Leake, Flannery and Danahy scored ahead of a goal by Delhi off of a clearing pass from the Bronco goalkeeper.
In the fourth quarter Leake led off the scoring to give Maritime a nine-goal lead at 13-4, the goal was assisted by Danahy for the 100th point of his career. Flannery scored off of a pass from Leake before three unanswered goals by the Broncos.
Danahy notched a goal off of a pass from Petty before Danahy netted his 10th goal of the year off a pass from Callahan. Delhi added a goal late to cap off the scoring for the contest.
Maritime (7-3, 2-1 Skyline) will wrap-up non-conference play on Monday evening, when the team travels to Becker for a 7 p.m. start in Leicester, Mass.
Delhi (2-8) will be on the road this Tuesday afternoon, when the team travels back to the New York Metropolitan area for a 4 p.m. start against the Farmingdale Rams.
