Maritime Controls Action in Dominant 18-1 Victory over Becker

LEICESTER, Mass.  – The Maritime men's lacrosse team played a rare Monday game as the team took their talents to Massachusetts for a non-conference bout with Becker on Alumni Field. Maritime had 10 different goal scorers and coasted to an 18-1 victory over the Hawks.
 
The 17-goal margin of victory was the highest margin since the 2013 season, when the Privateers hosted and defeated Becker by a 23-5 score on March 9 of that season.
 
Freshman Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led the offensive onslaught with a game-high six points as he notched four goals with a pair of assists. Senior Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had four points as he recorded two goals and two helpers. Senior Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) had two goals and one assist, while sophomore Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had the same stat line for three points.
 
Junior Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and freshmen Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Collin Flannery (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) all had two-point nights as Leake and Flannery had two goals apiece, while Trodden tallied one goal and one assist on the night.
 
Senior T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), sophomore Mike Gomes (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Daniel O'Sullivan (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) all had solo goals, while senior Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), junior Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and sophomore Shawn Callahan (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) added assists on the evening.
 
On faceoffs senior Anthony Gervasio (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and freshman Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) split duties with Gervasio winning 10-of-11 draws, while Manno notched seven wins in 11 attempts on faceoffs.
 
Sophomore Patrick McAllister (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) led the team with three ground balls, while he was one of four to force a turnover. Also picking up caused turnovers in the win were junior Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), sophomore Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), and Connell. Petty along with senior John Piscitello Jr. (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) and junior Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) all had two ground ball games.
 
In goal senior Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) got the start and picked up the win as he went the first 37:37 in goal and stopped four shots while yielding the lone Becker tally. Senior Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played the final 22:23 of the game and made one save.
 
Maritime led 6-0 through the first 15 minutes as Trodden, Flannery, DeMeo and Connell all scored while Pellegrino netted his two goals back-to-back to close out the first-quarter scoring. DeMeo added the first two goals of the second quarter before Becker struck late in the half as Maritime led 8-1 at halftime.
 
The Privateers pitched a shutout in the second half, while outscoring the Hawks 10-0. Connell, O'Sullivan, Danahy and DeMeo scored goals in the third quarter to give Maritime a 12-1 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
 
In the fourth Ragusa, Danahy, Leake, Gomes, Flannery, and Leake again scored to cap off the dominant Privateer attack.
 
Maritime (8-3, 2-1 Skyline) will be back at home on Friday evening, and return to Skyline Conference play as the Privateers host the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles for a 7 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.
 
Becker (1-9) will play again on Wednesday evening, as the Hawks travel to Mount St. Mary for a 7 p.m. start on Kaplan Field in Newburgh, N.Y.
