Men’s Lacrosse Powers Past Mount St. Vincent at Home, 14-1

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team coasted to a 14-1 victory over the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Saturday afternoon picking up the win on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime was led by sophomore Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), who had nine points on the game with five goals and four assists. The nine points is tied for second-most in a single game by a Privateer in modern-program history, dating back to the 2005 season.
 
Freshman Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also had a big afternoon for the Privateers as he tallied seven points with three goals and four assists on the game. Freshman Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) got the start and had two goals and one assist to round out Maritime's starting attack.
 
Seniors Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), along with sophomore Mike Gomes (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) all had solo goals on the game. Leake along with freshmen classmates Bryan Kegan and Shawn Callahan (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each had one assist apiece on the game.
 
On faceoffs freshman Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) got the bulk of the draws and won 7-of-11, senior Anthony Gervasio (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was 3-of-7 on the faceoff, while Keegan was 1-for-1 on his chances at the 'X'.
 
Defensively Maritime was led by sophomore Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)), who tallied seven caused turnovers on the game, while Leake forced three giveaways. Senior Paul Lafrancesca (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North), and sophomore Dan Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) each forced two giveaways apiece on the defensive side of the ball.
 
Junior Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) had a team-best seven loose ball pickups, while Leake and Manno each scooped up four ground balls apiece. McEnroe, Lafrancesca, and junior Matt Kirby (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each had three ground balls on the afternoon.
 
Senior Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) got the start in goal for the Privateers and made eight saves while allowing one goal through his 54:21 in net for Maritime. Freshman Nick Pasco (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) came on to close out the game and made one saves in the final 5:39.
 
Maritime scored early and often as the Privateers scored the first dozen goals on the game. Connell had two goals in the first quarter as did DeMeo. Daigle and Leake also scored one goal each in the first quarter to give Maritime a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Privateers added three goals in the second quarter as Trodden, DeMeo and Connell all struck in a span of 73 seconds to give Maritime a nine-goal lead heading into the break.
 
Connell got the goals started again in the third quarter to make the score 10-0 before Danahy scored to give Maritime an 11-0 lead heading into the final period.
 
In the fourth Leake potted his second of the game before Mount St. Vincent finally got on the baord with a goal directly off of the ensuing faceoff. Connell planted Maritime's lone man-up goal of the game with 6:40 to go in regulation before Gomes scored his first of the season with 3:07 left to cap off the scoring.
 
Maritime (6-1, 2-0 Skyline) will face its toughest Skyline task to date in its next game as the Privateers head to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to take the Mariners, who were selected as the preseason favorite. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29.
 
Mount St. Vincent (1-3, 0-2 Skyline) will travel to St. Joseph's (LI) for a Skyline Conference matchup on Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Danzi Complex.
