KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team continued Skyline Conference play on Thursday evening, falling to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 19-9 at Brooks Stadium on Long Island.
Maritime was led by freshman attackman
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who led the offense with three goals. Junior
Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) also had three points with two goals and one assist. Freshman
Collin Flannery (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) also added two goals while senior
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and junior
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) both had solo goals on the game.
Sophomore
Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a big defensive effort with six ground balls, while classmate
Patrick McAllister (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) scooped up two loose balls along with sophomore long-stick midfielder
Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)).
Freshman
Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) faced a tough test on faceoffs and won 8-of-24 while also scooping up two ground balls. Sophomore
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the team with two credited caused turnovers, while four other Privateers had one caused turnover apiece.
In goal senior
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) made nine saves while playing the majority of the 60 minutes. Senior
Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) made two stops in the final 3:10 of the game.
After the Mariners jumped ahead by a 3-0 score, Flannery scored his first of the night to open the scoring for the Privateers. Merchant Marine scored the next four goals to open up a six-goal advantage at 7-1 but a key penalty against the Mariners allowed the Privateers to climb back in.
DeMeo registered his first of the night off a pass from Trodden, followed by another man-up goals by DeMeo off a feed from senior
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South). DeMeo made it three-straight goals for Maritime as he opened the second quarter with his 17th tally of the season. The Mariners answered by scoring the next two to regain a five-goal edge at 9-4.
Flannery added a goal midway through the second quarter, before the Mariners potted the next two goals to take an 11-5 lead into the halftime break.
After a slow start in the second half for both teams the Privateers opened the second half with three unanswered goals. Trodden scored first followed by the 20th goal of the season by Pellegrino, Trodden then scored again to pull Maritime back within three at 11-8 with 3:38 left in the third period.
Merchant Marine scored with six seconds left in the third quarter, which sparked a 8-1 rally to close out the game as the Mariners ran away late with the 19-9 win.
Maritime (6-2, 2-1 Skyline) will be on the road for its second consecutive game with a 7 p.m. start in Newport, Rhode Island against Salve Regina.
Merchant Marine (7-0, 3-0 Skyline) will host the Mitchell Mariners on Saturday at 3 p.m. from Brooks Stadium.
