FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Wednesday the Maritime men's and women's swimming teams wrapped-up the dual meet season with a matchup against the Queens Knights at Fitzgerald Gymnasium Pool.
The men's team emerged victorious with a 156-28 win, while the women's team fell by a 79-105 margin. The men's team won 12 of 13 events during the meet.

Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) got the evening started with the first win of the night as the quartet posted a time of 3:56.06 in the 400 yard medley relay.
The first individual event of the night was the 1,000 freestyle with junior
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) pacing the field with a time of 12:27.39; freshman
Mark Shekhter (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and sophomore
Brendan Raffay (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) swept the podium for the Privateers. The Privateers swept the 200 freestyle as well with sophomore
Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), junior
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and freshman Mario Goncalves posting a 1-2-3 finish.
Senior
James Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and freshman
Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) were the only two in the pool to post sub-25 second times in the 50 freestyle, while sophomore
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), sophomore
Matt Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Shekhter swept the top-three spots in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore
Tyler Verheyleweghen (Tarpon Springs, Fla./Tarpon Springs) took first in the next event with a time of 59.60 in the 100 butterfly.
In the 100 freestyle Shekhter picked up the win by just 0.04 seconds as he posted a time of 58.62, while senior
Chris Johnson (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) took third with a 1:04.98. Raffay won the 100 backstroke by four seconds, ahead of junior
Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) cruised to a 26-second victory in the 500 freestyle.
The only event Maritime was unable to secure a victory in was the 100 yard breaststroke, but the Privateers did take the next three positions as Johnson, along with rookies
Jeff Hotaling (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills), and
Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic) all finished under 85 seconds apiece.
Maritime closed out the freestyle relay in convincing fashion with the top-three finishes in the event as well. Freshman
Derrick Kennedy (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), Murray, Hotaling, and Conway led the way with a 1:44.14, followed by Verheyleweghen, Shekhter, junior
Matthew Crowley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Somers), and sophomore
Harry Daghir (Havre de Grace, Md./Aberdeen) finishing just over five seconds off the pace.
Women's Recap
Maritime faced tough competition throughout the evening beginning with the 400 medley relay as the quartet of juniors
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), and
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence), sophomore
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), and freshman
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) took second place with a time of 4:56.05, finishing 25 seconds off the pace.

Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and junior
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) took part in the 1,000 freestyle with Curran taking third with a time of 14:26.16. Zink took third in the 200 freestyle with a 2:22.34, followed by Thompson in fifth with a 2:37.90. The 50 free was up next with freshman
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) leading the Privateers with a time of 31.80, with junior
Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) close on her heels with a 32.43.
Aaron swam the 200 individual medley and took third with a 2:36.92, followed by Brow and sophomore
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent). Zink and Thompson followed with a third and fourth place finish in the 100 butterfly.
Brow paced the Privateers in the 100 freestyle with a 59.62 for a second place finish, while Alicea took third at 1:15.11. Curran and Giorgio took part in the 100 backstroke followed by second place finish for Aaron and a third place finish for Davis in the 500 freestyle. Champlin closed out solo competition with a 1:35.73 in the 100 breaststroke, with sophomore
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep) also competing in the event.
During the 200 freestyle relay; Alicea, Davis, Curran and Champlin paced the Privateers with a time of 2:07.90, which was the fourth fastest time in the pool.
The swimming teams will close out the 2017-18 campaign with the 2018 Metropolitan Conference Championships slated to take place over a three-day span at the Rutgers Aquatic Center in New Jersey. Opening round action begins on Friday, February 16 at 9:30 a.m.
