The Maritime College men's swimming team picked up its third-straight win and improved to 3-0 at home with a big 164-42 win over Mount Saint Mary. The 2017-18 season saw a 148-52 defeat for the women's team against the Knights, but this year the Privateers almost pulled out the win as they lost by only six points, 108-102.
The men's team opened up the meet with the 200-yard medley relay, where
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis),
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain),
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), and
Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) led Maritime to a strong first place finish.
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) then followed it up in the 1000-yard freestyle as he touched the wall first at 11:29.77. The Privateers then kept it rolling in the 200-yard freestyle as freshman
Daniel Walsh (Naugatuck, CT/Sacred Heart) finished first at 1:49.85.
The 50-yard freestyle saw Maritime place three swimmers in the top four as
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) came in first at 22.64, Champlin touched third at 23.87, and
Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic) rounded it out in fourth at 24.36. The Privateers followed it up by sweeping the 200-yard IM with
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) winning the race at 2:07.56,
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) in second with a time of 2:26.78, and

Alex Baros (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy College Preparatory) continued the winning ways for the Privateers as he finished first in the 100-yard butterfly at 58.07, teammate
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) was right behind him by just one second at second place.
Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) followed Baros with a win of his own in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.88.
The 100-yard backstroke was led by Troy who posted an impressive 59.72 time in first place. Walsh then added another win to his day placing first in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:59.99. The meet was then capped off with wins in the 100-yard breaststroke by
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), and a top-three sweep in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
On the women's side,
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) picked up the first win of the day after back-to-back second place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 1000-yard freestyle. Aaron touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:12.23.
Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) followed up Aaron with an impressive performance in the 50-yard freestyle as she finished first with a time of 26.30. Two events later, Green added her second win of the day as she touched first at 1:04.14 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) then followed it up with a solid second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.59.
The 100-yard backstroke put the Privateers back on the winning track as
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) finished first with a time of 1:12.10. With the meet reaching the end, Aaron earned a key second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, while
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep) placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Maritime closed out the meet strong as the team of
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip),
Emma Haedrich (West Islip, NY/West Islip),
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent), and
Catherine Teige (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Our Lady of Good Counsel) dominated the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.82. Although the Privateers came up six points short, it was a promising showing for the team after a poor performance the previous year against the Knights.
Maritime gets back in the pool next semester on January 16 when they host St. Joseph's Brooklyn at 6:00 p.m.
