The Maritime College football team finished off its regular season with a dominant road win against Gallaudet. The Privateers saw the return of senior quarterback
Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) who threw for four touchdowns and helped lead the team to a 34-7 victory.
Following a missed 36-yard field goal from the Bisons, Wright found his rhythm and led a passing attack down the field for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead less than ten minutes into the game. Wright went 5-6 on the drive with completions of five, six, 19, 28, and 19 yards, respectively. The drive was capped off by a 19-yard touchdown to
Curtis Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht).
The defense did a great job of stopping Gallaudet on the ensuing drive and gave the offense another shot at adding to the lead before the end of the first quarter. A 13-yard run by
Christian Schiavone (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) got the drive started and then Wright ended it on the next play by finding his top target in
Brandonn Drumgole (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) for a 53-yard touchdown pass.
Gallaudet responded to the two score lead by marching right down the field and earning first-and-goal from the three-yard line. However, the Privateers buckled down and third-and-goal
James Varga (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights)Â forced a fumble and
Tayler Trapani (Waveland, Miss./St. Stanislaus) jumped on the loose ball in the end zone to secure the crucial turnover.
Maritime couldn't capitalize right away off the turnover, but after another stop from the defense, they were able to make it a three-score game. Wright found Drumgole once again with a 14-yard pass, which marked their 11th touchdown connection of the season.Â
With just four minutes remaining in the half, the Privateers were hungry to add to their lead again. Maritime turned to the aerial assault once again, this time Wright connected Smith three times for receptions of 11, nine, and 21 yards, respectively. The 21-yard touchdown pass gave the Privateers a 27-0 lead heading into the locker room.
The Bisons got on the board in their first drive of the second half, but the Maritime defense buckled down after that and didn't give them any thoughts of mounting a comeback. The Privateers recovered their second fumble of the game with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
John O'Connor (Johns Creek, Ga./Mount Pisgah) was there to pounce on the fumble this time to give the offense a chance at adding to the 27-7 lead.
With their first drive of the fourth quarter, Maritime iced the game with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was finished by a one-yard score from
Kahlil Lewin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall). The long touchdown drive took over five minutes and left Gallaudet with six minutes remaining in the game.
The defense came up with a sack on fourth-and-6 on the following drive and the Privateers were then able to pound the running game to run out the final four minutes of the game.
The dominant conference road win moved Maritime to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in ECFC play on the season. Wright finished the game 27-46 with 363 yards and four touchdowns. Lewin led the ball carriers with 55 yards on 11 carries, while
Christian Castle (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) picked up an impressive 124 yards on 12 catches to lead the receivers. Drumgole finished with 107 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while Smith was right behind with 76 yards and two scores.
Defensively,
Justin Snuffer (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) and
Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led the way with 12 tackles each. Snuffer,
Payton Campbell (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls), Varga,
Joseph Consalazio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), and
Salvatore Escaldi (Farmingville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) all tallied a sack in the strong defensive effort from the Privateers.
Maritime finished second conference play, one game behind Husson University. The Privateers are now eligible for the New England Bowl and will find out who plays in the bowl game on Monday afternoon.
