The Maritime College swimming and diving teams opened up its 2018-19 season with a split against William Paterson University. The men's team pulled away with a 124-90 win, while the women dropped a 137-88 dropped decision.
On the men's side, the Privateers got the race started with a bang as they finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay.
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park),
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame),
Alex Baros (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy College Preparatory), and
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) notched the first place finish with a time of 1:49.14. Following the first place finish, the team of
Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park),
Gabriel Menz (Vineland, NJ/Vineland),
Zach Woolley (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie), and
John Moloney (Selkrik, NY/Bethlehem Central) barely out touched the Pioneers as they reached second place with a time of 1:52.32, compared to the third place time of 1:52.65.
Daniel Walsh (Naugatuck, CT/Sacred Heart) kept the winning ways going for Maritime with a one-second win in the 200-yard freestyle. The freshman touched the wall with a time of 1:52.59, while the Pioneers came in second at 1:53.58. Wu followed it up in the 50-yard freestyle with a close win of his own by out touching William Paterson by .18 seconds. The Flushing, NY native earned nine points for the Privateers with a time of 22.78 seconds.
In the 12th event of the day,
Joseph Montano (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) tallied a score of 123.7 on the one-meter dive to earn nine points for Maritime.
The Privateers earned another dominant win in the 100-yard butterfly as Baros and Woolley finished first and second, respectively. The duo combined for 13 points for Maritime and kept the momentum going.
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) picked up key first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, while Walsh added another win in the 500-yard freestyle.
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) tallied the final first place finish on the day for the Privateers with a 1:05.99 time in the 100-yard breaststroke.
On the women's side,
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) earned a dominant win in the 1000-yard freestyle by touching in 12:31.75. A few events later,
Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) earned a solid second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.06.
In one-meter dive event,
Macy Blakeley (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) earned a score of 115.15 and picked up four points for the Privateers. Aaron then earned her second win of the day, this time in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.35. Green followed it up by improving on her second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and notching nine points and a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 58.74.
In the final event of the day, the team of
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo),
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep), Hannah Argiros, and
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Privateers finished with an impressive time of 1:53.45.
Maritime is scheduled to get back in the pool next Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Purchase College at 6:00 p.m.
