THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – After setting the single-season rebounding record on Saturday afternoon, junior
Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) collected a new single-game record 23 rebounds on Tuesday evening as the Maritime basketball team knocked off the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons by an 83-73 score from Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
In addition to his 23 rebounds, MacDonald paced the team offensively with 28 points as he also becomes the first player in program history to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. Senior
Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) was second on the team with 16 points, while fellow senior
Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) added a dozen points and also had a team-best four assists.
Junior
Akil Spruill (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) got the start and collected nine points, while junior
Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) and freshmen
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), and
Malik Clark (Central Islip, N.Y./Central Islip) each had six points apiece. Senior
Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) led Maritime with three steals, while also collecting two assists and two rebounds in 12 minutes on the floor.
The first 20 minutes of the game were close as neither side obtained more than a two-possession lead. Hoch got the night started for the Privateers as he trimmed the opening deficit to 3-2; MacDonald then sank a pair from the stripe to give Maritime their first lead of the game at 4-2.
Several possessions later McGovern then connected on three straight from the line to turn a 10-8 deficit into an 11-10 lead. After a turnover by Sarah Lawrence, MacDonald stepped behind the line and converted on the first three pointer of his career to put the Privateers up by four. Another Gryphon turnover gave MacDonald a chance to dunk the ball and give Maritime a six-point lead with 11:46 left in the opening stanza.
Sarah Lawrence was able to tie the game at 18 and again at 20, but the Privateers responded with four unanswered points on baskets by MacDonald and Spruill. The lead exchanged hands on six consecutive possessions before McGovern made a jumper to give Maritime a three-point lead with just 2:11 to go in the half. The Privateers got the lead back up to five in the waning minutes before Sarah Lawrence trimmed the lead to one at 36-35 heading into the locker room.
The Gryphons struck first in the second half to regain the lead, but Hoch drilled a three-pointer to put the Privateers back up by two. The lead continued to change on the scoreboard as both sides battled back and forth before Spruill connected on a three-point play followed by a Halligan layup and a Hoch three-pointer to give Maritime a seven point lead with 17:27 left in regulation. Sarah Lawrence scored the next seven points and tied the contest at 47.
With the score tied at 52 MacDonald connected on a layup off a dish from Clark and the Privateers never looked back. Halligan made a layup, followed by a pair at the line from MacDonald to make it a 58-52 score. MacDonald got the lead up to eight on an emphatic dunk to electrify the already spirited crowd that had filled Riesenberg Hall Gym.
The Gryphons got the lead back down to three, but McQuail knocked down a clutch three pointer with 6:47 remaining. The Privateers sank free throws late in the game as Clark went 2-for-2, followed by a pair from Halligan. MacDonald converted on a layup to make it a 10-point game at 79-69 with 2:14 to go. After four free throws from Sarah Lawrence, the Privateers got three at the stripe from McQuail and another from McGovern as the Privateers ran away late for the 10-point victory.
Maritime (10-13, 5-9 Skyline) reaches double-figures in wins for the first time since the 2009-10 season, when the team registered 19 victories that season and qualified for postseason play. The Privateers will look to increase its win total on Friday evening, when they host the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins at 7 p.m. from Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
Sarah Lawrence (8-16, 4-11 Skyline) will close out the season at home, when the Gryphons host the Mount St. Mary Knights at 1 p.m. from the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, N.Y.
