FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The Maritime men's rowing team competed this past weekend at the Head of the Occoquan regatta down in Northern Virginia. The conditions were favorable for fall rowing due to light winds and moderate temperatures.
The first event of the day was the men's collegiate 8+ event. Maritime finished in the top 10 and pulled their way to a 10th in a field of 19 entries. Maritime's collegiate 8+ finished the 4,000 meter course with a time of 17:19.06 just ahead of Duke.
The collegiate 8+ consisted of
Roury Higgins (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus),
Stefano Korkotas (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage),
James Louer Jr. (Clifton, N.J./Clifton),
Zach Woolley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie),
John Woods (Worcester, Mass./St. John's), and freshman
Christian Tanas (Chatham, N.J./St. Peter's Prep),
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach),
Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic), while junior
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown N.J./Bordentown Regional) coxed the boat for the race.
Following the 8+ to compete was the men's novice/frosh 4+ in their debut race of the year. The newcomers were able to post a 9th place finish out of 13th finished in a heat that included Marietta, Pittsburgh, Carnegie Melon, West Virginia, Duke, Virginia Commonwealth, Maryland, and Susquehanna. The up-and-coming crew finished their race with a time of 22:48.00.

Liam Sammons (St. Johnsville, N.Y./Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsvile), and coxed by sophomore coxswain
Madison Burbol (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport).
The final heat of the day that included Maritime went off with two Privateer entries. The Men's collegiate 4+ event had 27 overall entries in it and was the largest heat of the Head of the Occoquan.
The first Maritime entry was crewed by Higgins, Korkotas, Woods, Tanas, with Chilleli as the coxswain. The second entry from Maritime featured Murray, Louer, Wolley, Durrua, and was coxswained by sophomore
Ben Ludwig (New City, N.Y./Clarsktown North). Maritime boats in this event finished 13th (18:49.44) and 16th (19:19.41).
This weekend the Maritime rowing team will be travelling to the southern New Jersey for the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, and the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta on Sunday.
