Basketball's Second Half Lead Slips Away as Yeshiva Escapes with Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team took on the Yeshiva Maccabees on Thursday evening from the Max Stern Athletic Center, and fell to its host by a 93-85 score.

Junior Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) led the Privateers with a game-high 20 points, while recording four rebounds. Senior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) continued his hot pace with 18 points on the night as he led the team with three three-point baskets.

Junior John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had a team-best seven assists and added 14 points on the night. Fellow junior Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) chipped in with a dozen points, while both he and classmate Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) led the team with five rebounds apiece.

Senior Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) had nine points, including two three-pointers while freshman Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. McQuail added three points, while freshman Malik Clark (Central Islip, N.Y./Central Islip) had three rebounds and two assists with senior Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) rounding out the box score with three rebounds.

The Privateers fell behind early as Yeshiva connected on the first three field goals of the night to take a 7-0 lead. Liccese connected on a layup, but Yeshiva added to its lead and took a 12-2 advantage.

Maritime turned things around as a MacDonald layup sparked the Privateers into an 11-0 run as Hoch added four points, Hayes converted a layup and McGovern knocked down a three to give the Privateers their first lead of the game at 13-12 with 14:10 to go in the opening half.

The offensive output continued for the Privateers, as Maritime got back-to-back three-pointers from Halligan and McQuail. Yeshiva knocked down a long-range shot, but McGovern connected on his second three-pointer of the night to give the Privateers a 30-25 lead.

Yeshiva bounced back to take a 36-32 lead with an 11-2 run, but another lengthy run by the Privateers followed as McDonald got things going again with a free throw. Liccese eased in for a layup, followed by two-straight three-pointers from Hoch, and then a third consecutive three-pointer from Halligan to put the Privateers ahead by 10 with 1:39 left in the half.

The double-figure lead lasted into the halftime break and Maritime emerged with the first shot of the second half as Hayes gave the Privateers their largest lead of the night at a 48-36 margin. Yeshiva then went on a 16-4 run to even the contest at 52 with 14:09 to go in regulation.

After exchanging the lead on several occasions, Maritime and Yeshiva were tied at 58, and then again at 60. Just as it appeared the Privateers were going to pull away again following back-to-back three pointers by Liccese and McGovern, the Maccabees had an answer again with a pair of three-pointers of their own to knot the game at 66.

The game see-sawed several times over the next several possessions as the game moved into the closing minutes. With the score tied at 80, Yeshiva was first to break the deadlock and move ahead by a bucket. Liccese connected on one from the stripe to trim the deficit to one, but Yeshiva closed out the contest on an 11-4 run to escape with the win by a 93-85 margin.

Maritime (4-4, 1-2 Skyline) will be off the next few weeks and return to practice before travelling to Maine to take on the Maine Maritime on December 30 for a 2 p.m. start against the Mariners.
