PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams opened up Skyline Conference competition on Monday evening and picked up victories over the Purchase Panthers. The men's team defeated the Panthers by a score of 125-69, while the women's team scored a win over Purchase by a 113-89 margin.
The women's team collected five victories on the night, including wins in both the medley and freestyle relays. Freshman
Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) won in the 50 and 100 freestyle, while sophomore
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored a two-second victory in the 100 breaststroke.
The men's squad had the best times in all but one event, with senior
Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown), juniors
Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood), and
Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) sophomores
Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip), and
Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock), while freshmen
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes),
Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) all picking up individual victories throughout the event.
Maritime started off the night in convincing fashion in the 200 medley relay as junior
Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled), sophomore
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) along with Zink and Green swam to a victory with a time of 2:07.88. The second quartet for Maritime comprised of sophomores
Taylor O'Brien (Northport, N.Y./Northport), and
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), along with freshmen
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep) and
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) were second with a 2:23.56.
Aaron and senior
Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) were up in the 1,000 freestyle, with the pair taking second and third respectively to collect seven points for the Privateers. Junior
Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was the top Maritime finisher in the 200 freestyle, clocking in with a 2:16.79.
Green's first victory of the night came in the 50 freestyle, as she paced the field with a 26.72; senior
Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) was second (28.56), while sophomore
Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) took third with a 32.21. Zink and Soulagnet took second and third during the 200 individual medley, while Soulagnet and Davis took second and third in the 100 butterfly.
The second victory of the night for Green came in the 100 freestyle as she registered a time of 57.23, Leahy and freshman
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent) all picked up points in the event. T. O'Brien was second in the 100 backstroke, while Thompson took third, and junior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) finished fifth to help add to the team's victory.
The 500 freestyle saw Aaron narrowly edged by just over one second in the event, followed by Zink collecting her victory by almost two seconds in the 100 breaststroke as she collected a 1:20.65.
A. O'Brien, Stanton, Thompson and Leahy scored the final win of the night for the women's team with a 1:54.24 in the 200 freestyle relay.
The men's performance also got off to a quick start with an eight-second win in the 200 medley relay. Sophomores
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) teamed up with Truong and Russell to score a 1:45.95. Seniors
Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville),
Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg), and Lewis teamed with rookie
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) to finish second with a 1:53.01.
Kelleher got his first victory of the night in the 1,000 freestyle as he scored a time of 11:11.58 to pace the field. Junior
Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and sophomore
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) rounded out the top-three in the event. Moriarty scored a win in the 200 freestyle, with a strong showing as he picked up an eight-second win with a 1:58.61.
Katz made it four victories in a row to start the night for the men's team as he picked up a 24.14, followed closely by senior
Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) with a 24.74, and junior
Pat O'Dea (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) with a 24.86 as Maritime swept the top three positions. Truong scored a win in the 200 individual medley with a 2:09.52, edging out the 2014-15 Skyline Swimmer of the Year by four seconds.
Lewis made it 6-for-6 as the Privateers picked up another win in the 100 butterfly as the senior tallied a 1:00.09. Freshman
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) was second with a 1:02.61. Russell added a win in the 100 freestyle as he picked up a two-second win as he collected a time of 51.21. Rubino added another win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.36, nearly 13 full seconds ahead of junior teammate
Kevin Gilroy (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North).
With the win in hand, the men's team swam exhibition heats the rest of the night as Kelleher picked up a win in the 500 freestyle with a 5:21.99. Lewis took second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.21, while junior
Adrian Klein (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Gilmer Country (W. Va.)) and senior
Jonathan Low (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished third and fourth, respectively
Maritime closed out the night with a 15-second win in the 200 freestyle relay as Russell, Truong, Marino and Wu picked up a 1:36.62. Maritime's second team was Murray, Schnebel, Katz and junior
James Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) as they scored a 1:38.40. The third team to finish was also Maritime, as Dratch, Kelleher and sophomores
Matthew Crowley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Somers) and
Kyle Zajaczkowski (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) recorded a 1:45.87.
With the victory the men's team improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Skyline competition, while the women's team improves to 2-1 overall with a 1-0 mark in the Skyline. The team's will be off the remainder of the week and be back in the pool next Monday, when the team hosts Old Westbury at 6 p.m. inside Riesenberg Aquatic Center.
