Swimming & Diving Competes at Merchant Marine Invitational

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime swimming and diving teams took part in the Merchant Marine Invitational on Saturday, as the Privateers competed in a 32 event meet hosted by the Mariners in O'Hara Hall.
 
Maritime's women's team saw junior Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot); sophomores Taylor O'Brien (Northport, N.Y./Northport), and Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and freshman Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) score a time of 2:10.18 in the 200 medley relay. That was followed by Green taking second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.94, finishing just 0.3 seconds off the pace.
 
In the 100 backstroke, O'Brien led the Privateers with a time of 1:20.31 with freshman Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) finishing just behind with a time of 1:20.58. Stanton led the Privateers in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.20, while Zink led the Privateers in the 200 butterfly with a 2:54.43.
 
Up next was the one meter diving with junior Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) recording a score of 125.10 as the team's lone diver at the meet.
 
The Privateers had nine entries in the 50 freestyle as it was once again Green to post an impressive time of 26.30 to lead the Privateers and finish third overall out of 44 entries. During the 200 freestyle, Stanton led Maritime again with a time of 2:23.48. Competing in the 100 butterfly, Green posted yet another top time as she collected a 1:03.34 to finish second and was just over one second off the lead in the event.
 
Zink led Maritime in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:59.70 to close out individual competition for the women's team. In the 400 freestyle relay, Zink, Green and senior Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) and junior Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled) registered a time of 4:12.60 and finished fifth in the meet.
 
The men's team opened up action in the 200 medley relay with junior Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot); and sophomores Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock), and Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) coming in sixth position with a time of 1:43.16.
 
The 500 freestyle saw freshman Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) lead the Privateers with a time of 5:12.47. In the 200 individual medley, Kelleher led Maritime again as he paced the team's eight entries with a time of 2:11.68. Russell led Maritime in the 100 freestyle as he touched the wall with a time of 51.98, classmate Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood) was second for the Privateers with a time of 54.00.
 
Freshman Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) led the Privateers in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.04, sophomore Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip) was close behind with a time of 1:01.75. In the 100 breaststroke, Wu posted a top-three time with a third place finish in the event with a 1:01.79. In the 200 butterfly, senior Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) was the top Privateer finisher with a time of 2:09.87.
 
In diving competition, senior John Brown (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights) posted a career-best score of 184.50 as he finished second place in the one meter diving event. Senior Ryan Wood (Sparta, N.J./Blair Academy)s posted a score of 150.30, followed by sophomore Kurt Schieferstein (Lattingtown, N.Y./Chaminade) with a 135.15.
 
The 50 freestyle saw multiple Maritime entries with Wu leading the way once again for the Privateers with a sixth place finish as he posted a 22.59. Truong was second for Maritime with a 23.74, while Russell was third with a 24.10. In the 200 backstroke, Marino posted a 2:12.19, while Kelleher led Maritime with a 4:39.78 in the 400 individual medley.
 
During the 200 freestyle, the Privateers were led by Truong with a 1:55.60, followed by Kelleher with a 1:55.80. Moriarty had a 1:57.71, followed by Rubino with a 2:04.02. Up next was the 100 butterfly, which saw Wu pace the Privateers again with a 54.25, Lewis finished up with a 1:01.06.
 
Brown led the Privateers again in the three meter diving with a score of 156.75, followed by Wood with a 144.25.
 
In the 200 breaststroke it was Marino to lead the five Privateer entries with a 2:28.51. Freshman Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) was able to finish with a 2:35.86, followed by freshmen Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), sophomore Logan Riales (Bonham, Texas/Maury (Va.)), and senior Jonathan Low (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale).
 
The Privateers wrapped up the meet with a fifth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, which saw Russell, Truong, Katz and Wu register a 3:28.68 to finish just ahead of the quartet from Vassar.
 
No team scores we kept at the Merchant Marine Invitational aside from the Mariners and Privateers head-to-head meet, counting towards the Skyline Conference standings. Merchant Marine won both the men's and women's meets.
 
Maritime will return to action on Friday, December 2, when the team hosts the Mount St. Mary Knights in both men's and women's swimming. The women's team will also meet the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles for the second time this season. The meet begins at 6 p.m. from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center.
