Swimming Splits Friday Action as Men Swim by Mount St. Mary, Women fall to Knights

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's & Women's Swimming teams were back in action on Friday evening from the Kaplan Center Pool on the campus of Mount St. Mary College. The Privateer men defeated the Knights by a score of 122-81, while the women fell by the score of 139-57.
 
The Privateer men's team got off to yet another quick start as the Privateers took the top three positions in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Matt Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) picked up a first place finish with a 1:46.61. The second Privateer quartet of Pat O'Dea (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier), John Accetta (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg), Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) were just a quick stride behind at 1:46.89.
 
Maritime's third team of Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg), Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway), and Ryan Fitzgerald (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) came to the wall with a time of 1:57.88.
 
Mount St. Mary responded with a win in the 1,000 Freestyle as Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) finished 1.48 seconds off the lead with a time of 11:14.00 in the event. Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) finished third, with Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) coming in fifth. Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) got Maritime its first individual victory of the night with a 1:49.67, Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood) and Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) came in fourth and fifth position.
 
Wu scored his second win of the night with a time of 22.82 in the 50 Freestyle, with Dean coming in fourth (24.16), and Kevin Gilroy (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) finishing fifth (26.42). Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) made it three straight wins for the Privateers with a three-second win (2:12.91). Fitzgerald (2:20.39), and DeYoung (2:25.17), came in third and fourth respectively.
 
Truong made it 2-for-2 on the night with a strong finish in the 100 Butterfly, touching the wall with a time of 55.97. Schnebel finished in third place with a 1:01.93, followed by Murray in fifth with a 1:03.34. The Privateers followed with Russell, Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip), and Nicholas Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) finishing with sub-minute times in the 100 Freestyle, all within the top five.
 
Cannon came in second in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:02.30, with Katz (1:03.75) and Rubino (1:07.25) close behind in third and fourth, respectively. In the 500 Freestyle, Lewis led Maritime with a third place finish at 5:31.77, Doherty and Brow posted time just above six minutes.
 
Up next, Marino scored a victory for the Privateers with a time of 1:04.46 in the 100 Breaststroke, while Erskine came in third with a 1:07.63. Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) finished in fifth with a time of 1:09.92.
 
The night concluded with Maritime swimming unopposed in the 200 Freestyle Relay as Truong, Russell, Murray, and Wu scored a win in the final race with a time of 1:33.49. Dean, Rubino, Accetta, and Peter Skerys (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) finished five seconds off the mark with a 1:38.90.
 
Brow, Charles Gallagher (Port Ewen, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), Pierce, and Kyle Zajaczkowski (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) finished with a time of 1:45.92, while Tom Mirrione (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central), Adrian Klein (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Gilmer Country (W. Va.)), and Hoey finished fourth with a 1:47.57 as both relay squads swam exhibitions.
 
For the women's swimming team, the quartet of Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled), and Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) got the night started with a third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay as the quartet posted a time of 2:11.16.
 
Ekaterina Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) led Maritime in the 1,000 Freestyle, as she came in second with a time of 12:25.72. Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) clocked in with a time of 14:15.72 during the 1,000 Free. Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) was up next in the 200 Freestyle with a 2:54.64; Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) followed her closely with a 2:55.20 time in the event.
 
Leahy placed third in the 50 Freestyle with a 29.23, with Catherine Teige (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Lady of Good Counsel) just .04 seconds off the mark with a fourth place finish in with a 29.27. Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) swam as an exhibition and had a time of 34.61. The 200 Individual Medley was up next with Soulagnet leading the Privateers with a 2:45.09, Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was able to record a time of 3:00.59.
 
Zink led Maritime in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:07.63, with Soulagnet posting a time of 1:22.15. In the 100 Freestyle, it was Teige to spearhead the Privateer trio with a time of 1:05.54, with Granit (1:20.73) and Schnabel (1:19.77) finishing the 100 Free as well.
 
With a second place finish, Crandall led Maritime in the 100 Backstroke events, as she was just five seconds off the mark with a 1:11.88. Aaron was next to the wall for Maritime with a 1:38.63. In the 500 Freestyle, Davis (6:45.98) and O'Brien (6:59.50) finished behind the top two for the Knights. Zink (1:16.53), and Crandall (1:25.92) finished in second and fourth respectively in the 100 Breaststroke to conclude individual competition.
 
Maritime's top relay team finished the night in second place, as O'Brien, Teige, Aaron, and Leahy were just 2.42 seconds off the lead with a time of 1:57.93.
 
The meet for the Privateers against the Knights concluded the Fall 2015 portion of the team's schedule. Maritime will break for the winter and reconvene in early January.
 
The women's swimming team will open up action in a head-to-head meet with St. Joseph's (Bklyn) on January 15 at 6 p.m. from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center. The men's team will be back in action in a tri-meet with Queens and York (N.Y.) on January 21 on the campus of Queens College.
