Playoff Preview: Maritime Visits Mount St. Mary in Skyline First Round Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Coming off yet another historic season, the Maritime Volleyball team will make its second consecutive Skyline Conference Tournament appearance as the sixth seed later this evening at 7 p.m. against third seeded Mount St. Mary from the Kaplan Center in Newburgh, N.Y.
 
Under the direction of first year head coach Michele Murray, Maritime set a program record with both 16 overall victories on the year, while also setting a program-best five league victories in 2015.
 
As a program, Maritime set numerous all-time highs with 921 kills, 837 assists, 339 service aces, and assisted blocks with 89, while playing in a record 103 sets throughout the season.
 
Leading the way for the Privateers have been junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). On the year Brady led the team with 250 kills, with Lombardo close behind at 244. Lombardo also set a new single-season record with 79 service aces on the year, breaking current the record of current teammate Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), who set the bar at 72 in 2014.
 
Also contributing to the record number of points for Maritime this season has been junior newcomer Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central), who shattered the single season record by nearly 300 assists as she finished the regular season with 635 helpers (6.98 A/S) in 2015. Bailey is also fourth on the single-season service aces list as she recorded 59 this year.
 
Making an immediate impact in her freshman season was rookie Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), the left-handed Texas native registered 161 kills and 57 service aces, while setting a new program standard for assisted blocks on the year with 30, as she stands with a team-best 47 blocks overall this season.
 
In addition to blocks from Hayes, Lombardo had 24 block assists, Brady had 12, and senior Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) added 11 of her own for a season total of 14, to go along with her 33 kills. Senior Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner), has split time with Sheehy this season and collected 28 kills, five services aces and six blocks.
 
The dig total for Maritime reached 1,252, which is second all-time in a single season. Maritime was led by Brady and Lombardo, who tied for the regular season lead with 265 apiece. Senior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) was third on the team with 199 digs, to go along with her 90 kills and 39 service aces. Bailey also chipped in with 145 digs, while freshman libero Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) recorded 119 digs with five service aces in her first season with the team.
 
Adding depth to the Maritime lineup is junior Irene Gogos (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Aviation), who registered 39 digs and six service aces, classmate Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up seven service aces to go along with 27 digs thus far on the year. Freshman Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) also appeared in 11 matches in 2015 and amassed 13 kills to go along with nine digs.
 
For the second straight season in the Skyline Conference Tournament Maritime will be the sixth seed, and will square off with third-seeded Mount St. Mary on Tuesday evening in Newburgh, N.Y.
 
This year, the Knights finished the campaign with a 15-18 overall record, with an 8-2 mark in Skyline matches. The team comes in off of four straight wins and winners of eight of its last 10 matches on the season. Earlier this season, the Privateers and Knights met on September 27 at Old Westbury; with Mount St. Mary sweeping Maritime by a 3-0 score (25-13, 25-16, 25-12).
 
Mount St. Mary was led by Rachel Sabatini with 196 kills, followed closely by Kayla Kurka with 177. Kimberly Gries leads the way with 517 helpers, with Kristen Maddock second on the team with 332.
 
Maddock was also tied for the team lead in services aces, as both she and Kaitlin O'Brien recorded 58 aces on the year. Gries was a dozen behind the team lead, finishing the campaign with 46 in 31 matches.
 
Defensively, Gries had 552 digs, with Sabatini recording 202, O'Brien was third on the team with 201 digs. The blocking game will be a big advantage for the Knights, as Mount St. Mary finished the season with 229 as Megan Williams picked up 58 blocks, followed by Kurka with 42 on the season.
