Final ResultsTHROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's and Women's Swimming teams were back in action inside the Riesenberg Aquatic Center on Monday evening as the teams welcomed in the Purchase Panthers for a Skyline Conference meet.
The Men's team remained unbeaten with another overwhelming performance against Purchase at 134-55, while the women's team fell behind early but staged a late rally to close the gap as the Privateers fell by a 110-87 margin.
Maritime's men quartet of senior
Matt Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), junior
Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), freshman
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and sophomore
Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) took care of business in the 200 Medley Relay to get the night started, beating out Maritime's B Relay team by just three-tenths of a second (1:47.74). Comprising Maritime's B Relay were sophomores
Pat O'Dea (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) and
John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen), along with freshmen
John Accetta (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg) and
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) with a 1:48.04.
The Privateers had two other relay squads racing in the competition with
Aaron Perez (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy),
Adrian Klein (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Gilmer Country (W. Va.)),
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), and
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) coming in third (2:02.61), while
Kevin Gilroy (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North),
Brian Roberts (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville),
Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and
Kyle Zajaczkowski (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) came in fourth (2:03.53), ahead of Purchase's relay squad.
Junior
Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) continued his dominance in the 1,000 Freestyle (11:22.80), coming in with a 44-second victory over the next closest competitor in teammate
Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) (12:06.77). Freshman
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) came in third with a 12:06.80.
Freshman
Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) also remained at the top of the leaderboard in his events, posting a 12-second win in the 200 Freestyle (1:50.32). Chilelli followed with a 2:02.74, while
Andrew Katz (Elwood, N.Y./John Glenn) touched the wall in third position (2:02.90). Dean, Wu, and senior
Peter Skerys (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) swept the board with their efforts in the 50 Freestyle as the trio posted sub 25-second times.
In the 200 Individual Medley, senior
Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) missed out on the win by three seconds (2:10.89). Cannon (2:19.13), and DeYoung (2:24.40) rounded out the scoring positions in the event for the Privateers.
Truong scored his second win of the night with a time of 56.40 in the 100 Butterfly, followed by junior
Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) with a 1:00.98, and senior
Ryan Fitzgerald (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) with a 1:01.86. Russell scored with a win in the 100 Freestyle (51.58), while senior
Nicholas Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was less than three seconds off the pace (54.21), junior
Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) (54.84), and Accetta (57:26) also posted sub-minute times in the event.
Rookie
Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip), Katz and Fitzgerald swept through the 100 Backstroke, while Lewis, Doherty and Brow took the top-three spots in the 500 Freestyle. Marino, Erskine, Chilelli, and Lyon were all within six seconds of one another in the 100 Breaststroke.
The night ended with Maritime putting four relay teams in the pool during the 200 Freestyle Relay. Truong, Russell, Marino, and Wu collected a final time of 1:36.23. Sophomore
Tom Mirrione (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), junior
Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central), Murray and Katz came to the finish in second place (1:41.88), followed by Dean, Hoey, Gilroy and Schnebel with a 1:41.91. The fourth relay team of Rubino, Pierce, Zajaczkowski and junior
Charles Gallagher (Port Ewen, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) recorded a 1:45.24, as all four relay teams finished ahead of Purchase.
The women's night began with freshman
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), senior
Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), sophomore
Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled) and junior
Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) picking up a time of 2:07.86 in the Medley Relay, just five seconds off the pace.
Freshman
Ekaterina Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) recorded the first win of the night for the women's team with a dominating 92-second win over her closest competitor in the 1,000 Freestyle. Junior
Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) came in third with a 14:04.30. Rookie
Catherine Teige (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Lady of Good Counsel) swam to a third place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:30.71, followed by sophomore
Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and classmate
Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's).
Leahy, along with freshman
Katherine Reed (), and sophomore
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) collected seven combined points in the 50 Freestyle, as Leahy was narrowly edged out with her time of 28.16. Soulagnet took home the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:38.21.
Zink followed that up with a second place performance in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:09.79, with Soulagnet coming in third with a 1:17.62. Reed led the Privateer women in the 100 Freestyle, as she edged out Granit by two seconds, with Schnabel rounding out the field Maritime trio during the event.
Crandall touched the wall second in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:19.63, followed by sophomore
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) with a 1:31.38; Kempski was third for Maritime with a 1:51.21. Aaron took second in the 500 Freestyle, missing out on the win by just five seconds (6:01.03), O'Brien followed for Maritime with a 7:01.25. Aaron then answered with a win in the 100 Breaststroke at 1:20.36, followed by Crandall with a 1:26.14 for the top two spots; Teige came to the finish in fourth with a 1:32.46.
In the freestyle relay to close out the night, Maritime's quartet of O'Brien, Zink, Leahy and freshman
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) collected another win to close the scoring margin, but it was not enough as Purchase held on for the win. Maritime's foursome won with a time of 1:57.18, while the B Relay of Yee, Reed, Granit and Teige scored a 2:14.33.
The Maritime Men (4-0, 3-0 Skyline) and Maritime Women (2-2, 2-1 Skyline) will be back in action on Friday evening when the team heads back to Long Island for a 6 p.m. start at the Danzi Athletic Center in Patchogue, N.Y. The Privateer men will go head-to-head with the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, while the women will be featured in a tri-meet with the Gryphons and host St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles.
