Swimming Team Sweeps Mount St. Vincent in 2015 Opener

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime swimming team started the spring portion of the season off with a convincing victory over the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Tuesday evening from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center. The men won its fifth and final head-to-head Skyline matchup, while the women's team picked up its second conference win of the season.
 
On the men's side, the Privateers won all 11 of their events against the Dolphins, while the women won nine of the 11 events for a combined 20 of 22 event wins.
 
The men cruised to victory in the opening event as senior Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep), sophomore Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), senior Daniel Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), and classmate Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) picked up 11 points in the 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:49.78), the second place squad saw junior Matthew Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), senior Robert Lalena (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity), sophomore Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) and senior Jimmy Jorgenson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) come in six seconds later (1:55.99). The Privateers swept the board with the quartet of freshmen Pat O'Dea (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier), Adrian Klein (Bronx, W.Va./Gilmer Country), Aaron Perez (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), and Patrick Ward (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) coming in with a time of 2:06.59.
 
Maritime swam unopposed in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle as senior Matthew Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) narrowly edged out Lewis by just seven one-hundredths of a second for the win. Freshman Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) picked up a win in the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:08.99) followed by rookie Brian Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) picking up a win in the 50-Yard Freestyle barely over rookie John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen).
 
Junior Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), sophomore Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and freshman Kevin Nelson (Valley Stream, N.Y./Hewlett) swam to a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-Yard Individual Medley. Hemmer notched a win in the 100-Yard Butterfly, followed by McNamara picking up a solid time of 52.88 in the 100-Yard Freestyle. Haughn won in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, while Collins earned another win in the 500-Yard Freestyle. Erskine capped off the individual events with a win in the 100-Yard Breaststroke as he recorded a time of 1:08.58.
 
The sweep was sealed with a victory in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as Russell, Dean, Brow and McNamara beat out the team of Jorgenson, Hemmer, and freshmen Kevin Keane (East Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Andrew Katz (Elwood, N.Y./John Glenn) by less than one second in an exciting finale.
 
For the women, the night began with Maritime collecting nine points in the 200-Yard Medley Relay as the team of senior Mariel VanderLinden, freshman Sarah Soulagnet, sophomore Rhiannon Galletta, and rookie Abigail Granit collected a win (2:29.32). Sophomore Ashley O'Brien followed up with a win in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 14:30.12. Classmate Danielle Leahy collected the third straight win for the women's team with a time of 2:30.15 in the 200-Yard Freestyle.
 
Mount St. Vincent earned the win in the 50-Yard Freestyle, with sophomore Alyssa Esposito picking up four points for the Privateers with a second place finish. Soulagnet got Maritime back on the winning track with a first place and convincing one-minute victory in the 200-Yard Individual Medley (2:42.59), then followed that up with a first place finish in the 100-Yard Butterfly as she recorded a time of 1:09.70.
 
Leahy registered another victory for the Privateers in the 100-Yard Freestyle (1:06.97), followed by a first place finish by VanderLinden collecting a win in the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:10.56). Two events later, VanderLinden swam her way to another win in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:24.62). The night was capped off with a win in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as O'Brien, Granit, Leahy and freshman Gabrielle Kempski collected a win by more than 11 seconds.
 
The win marks an end to the conference portion of the schedule as the Maritime men capped off their sixth consecutive perfect Skyline season since the league moved to the head-to-head format for the 2009-10 season. The women's team ends the league slate with a 2-4 record.
 
The regular season comes to a conclusion for the Privateers on Thursday, January 22 when Maritime hosts Division II Queens College for a meet set to begin at 6 p.m. from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center. In addition to the swimming competition, the meet will also feature diving events as well.
