BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2014) – On Saturday, the Maritime women's volleyball team achieved something that hasn't been done by the program in quite some time. The Privateers won both matches at the Sarah Lawrence tri-match over Bard College and the host Gryphons for the squad's first three-match winning streak in the past decade. Maritime improves to 3-2 on the season, which is the first time the team has been over the .500 mark since the 2011 season.

The first match of the day was a thriller. The Privateers jumped out to a two-sets to none lead overall in the contest with 25-16 and 25-21 wins, but Bard charged back to tie the match, winning sets three and four, 25-20 and 33-31, to force a decisive fifth set. Maritime came out strong in the final set, starting out on a 7-1 run and never looked back, taking the set 15-10.

Freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) matched a Maritime modern day program record with 21 kills in the match, tying former Privateer Danielle Scicutella, who reached that mark back in 2004. She also picked up 17 digs for her first career double-double. Sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) also recorded double-doubles, as they both had 18 assists, Lombardo had 12 kills and McCormack had 17 digs. Two Privateers registered 20-plus digs, as freshman Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) had a match-high 24 and senior Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) picked up 21 digs.

The second match was a bit quicker for Maritime, as they swept Sarah Lawrence, 25-12, 25-17 and 25-10. Lombardo led the way with 10 kills and 10 assists, while Brady and Kempski both had nine kills. McCormack chipped in with 16 assists, and Carella led all players in the match with eight digs.

The Privateers are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Madison, N.J., to take part in a tri-match hosted by FDU-Florham. Maritime will take on the host Devils at 4:30 p.m. and then face off against Mount St. Mary College at 6:30 p.m.
