Privateers Stumble at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, NY – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College volleyball team hit the road for a Skyline Conference matchup with Old Westbury.  After the sides split the first two sets, the Panthers (7-6, 3-4 Skyline) closed out a 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the Privateers (3-18, 1-7 Skyline) at the Clark Athletic Center.

There were 13 ties and eight lead changes in a back-and-forth first set.  Old Westbury built an early 4-2 cushion before Maritime rallied to go up 10-7.  After the Panthers used a 13-7 run to regain a 20-17 advantage, the Privateers responded with six of the next eight points to take a 23-22 lead.  Old Westbury claimed the final three points of the set, however, to secure a 25-23 win.

In the second set, the Panthers jumped out to a 14-5 advantage.  Maritime gradually came clawing back, however, going on a 17-8 spurt to level the score at 22-22.  After an Old Westbury hitting error put the Privateers in front, Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) served back-to-back aces to give Maritime a 25-22 set win and even the match at one set apiece.

The Panthers opened up an early lead again in the fifth set, scoring the first five points.  The Privateers pulled within 8-7 on a Maeby Irving (Hopkinsville, KY) ace, but Old Westbury countered with a 13-5 rally to build a 21-12 cushion.  The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-15 triumph in the set.

After Old Westbury went up 5-4 in the fourth set, Maritime scored nine of the next 13 points to go ahead 13-9.  The Panthers responded with a 7-0 run, though, to regain a 16-13 advantage.  The Privateers got back within one at 18-17 before Old Westbury used a 7-2 spurt to claim the set, 25-19, and finish off a 3-1 match victory.

Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) had her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) recorded eight kills and 10 digs, while Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) notched 29 kills and eight digs.  Anastasiades, meanwhile, contributed 11 digs.

Two Panthers posted double-doubles.  Paige Herbert tallied 15 kills, 13 digs and four aces, and Amaya McFadden registered 10 kills and 15 digs to go along with four aces.  Julia Brandes handed out 40 assists, while Ava Cavanaugh returned 11 digs.

Maritime concludes non-conference play with a 6 p.m. matchup at Lehman (2-13) on Friday.  The contest, which will be broadcast live on FloCollege, is the Privateers' final road match of the season.
