Maritime Topped By Manhattanville

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team welcomed four-time defending Skyline Conference champion Manhattanville to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.  After two tight sets, the Valiants (6-9, 3-2 Skyline) ran away with the third to notch a 25-20, 25-22, 25-11 win over the Privateers (3-17, 1-6 Skyline).

Maritime got off to a solid start, taking a 4-2 lead in the opening set on a pair of Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) service aces.  After a Laci Werner (New York, NY) kil made 14-10, Manhattanville rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to go ahead 20-16.  An Andressa Dias-Moreira (Forest Hills, NY) kill sparked a 3-0 rally that brought the Privateers within one at 20-19, but the Valiants ended the set on a 5-1 spurt to claim a 25-20 win.

Manhattanville scored the first three points of the second set and eventually extended their advantage to 12-8.  However, a kill by Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) started a 5-1 Maritime run that pulled the Privateers even at 13-13.  The Valiants regained a 23-17 edge before Werner slammed a kill to ignite a 5-0 spurt that cut Maritime's deficit to 23-22.  Manhattanville won the next two points, though, to wrap up a 25-22 set triumph and go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, the Valiants raced out to a 13-3 lead and cruised to a 25-11 win that sealed the 3-0 victory.  Manhattanville hit .310 as a team in the third set, ripping 11 kills and committing just two errors in 29 attempts.

Werner led the Privateers with 11 kills.  She also had two aces.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) finished with 23 assists, five digs and two blocks, while Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) recorded a team-best 17 digs.  Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) contributed eight digs, and Weist tallied seven digs to go along with five kills.  Dias-Moreira posted five kills of her own on .357 hitting.

Cassidy Fallon hit .526 for the Valiants, smashing 11 kills with just one error in 19 attempts.  She added three blocks (two solo) and two aces.  Caylin Caballero notched seven kills and seven digs, while Aurea Obradors was credited with six kills on .400 hitting.  Alina Rivera Torres had 16 assists, seven digs and three aces, and Eva Becerra distributed 14 assists.  Kayla Jennings, meanwhile, returned a match-best 18 digs for Manhattanville.

On Wednesday, Maritime returns to action with a 6 p.m. matchup at Old Westbury (6-5, 2-3 Skyline).  The Privateers have won each of their last three meetings against the Panthers.
